This is not for children under 6. There are some scary parts in the beginning presentation plus it's dark and had scary music, wish I had known beforehand. Save your time and MONEY and just walk around town- not down the tourist trap shopping lane. The more in depth review below is spot on. It's so sad this is the only original building left it's been changed inside and looks modern, the outside is the only cool part about it. Other places around are better. We came in from out of town but will never go back. Hope this will save someone.

I was disappointed by this museum. The tour is set up in two parts: a presentation in an auditorium that outlines the history of the 1692 witch trials, and a guided tour through the museum proper that outlines the history and evolution of witchcraft generally. The presentation that starts the tour is well done. You sit in the center of the auditorium and all around you are various exhibits that detail certain prominent scenes during this year of hysteria. The lighting is dynamic and well-timed. The presentation is delivered by a dramatic and engaging narrator. This is the definite highlight of the experience. Following the presentation, you're led into the museum and the second portion which talks about the shifting perceptions of witchcraft. While I feel that this theme is necessary for the museum, it doesn't carry enough weight to engage the visitors. My tour guide clearly knew about the small exhibits, but that isn't enough for this museum to be worthwhile. This period in American history is a time of collective embarrassment, so it's likely that efforts weren't taken to preserve the history as it was happening, but aside from the wooden beam that supported the roof of the original Salem jail, there were no artifacts. I'll concede that primary sources may not exist from this time, but clearly they know what happened at the time, so unless the entire history they present is based on anecdotal evidence, I expect at least a re-creation of the original documents or something that involves me in this time period. This museum could've been in Boston, or Chicago, or Denver and it wouldn't be demonstrably different. This event happened over 300 years ago, and I'm sure Salem has changed a lot in that span, but the museum was built there due to what I can only assume as a nominal connection. If you're in Salem already, you have an hour to kill, $12 to spare, and aren't familiar with Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" the museum might be worth your time. Barring that, find a copy of the film (based on the play) and watch that instead. Miller altered some of the details, but as near as I can tell, his play brings the energy and hysteria of the Salem witch trials to light in a way that the museum simply did not.

So much history in this area. It was rather impressive. The puppet show does need some updating, but all in all you still kno and understand what happened during those days.

I went February 2017. This place is great for kids tells a good story but could use some sprucing up. I would love to see live actors instead of robo wax figurines.
