The food was decent, if sort of typical, diner fare. The potatoes were very good, as was that gravy. Will probably try a different main dish next time. The staff was extremely polite and treated my whole family, from the one-year-old to the seventy-year-old, very well. We were given a perfect amount of attention. While I've sometimes had better food at other diners, the Salinas Black Bear Diner was good, and I've rarely had better service anywhere. Excellent crew will bring me back again.

Always great at Black Bear Diner! They started back in 1995 at Mount Shasta, California, then over past 20 years added about 100 locations across WA, OR, ID, IA, UT, AZ, CO. The Salinas Black Bear is tucked in at the Laurel Inn Hotel, watch carefully for the entrance to east of the 101. Plenty of parking, then you walk into a big lobby entrance. The hostess greeted us, asked our seating preference. The tables were filling up with the dinner crowd. Our waitress was nice, we noticed she was covering a lot of tables. We only needed pie & coffee, no rush. It was raining outside, we needed the break. My warm apple pie was perfection! So much of the food industry has gone commercial, but not Black Bear Diner! We fed our infant grandson his baby food, and got back on the road. In case you did not know: March 14th is National Reuben Sandwich Day. You're welcome!

Good food and large portions. Make sure you come hungry! The biscuits are better in the early morning but tend to be more crumbly later in the day. Try the pies if you have room after finishing their massive dishes.

Very friendly staff. Amazing food all day. Breakfast serves all day for those breakfast lovers. Best chicken fried steak in town. Mildly quiet, usual factor for Diners.

Cute place. Favorite breakfast spot so far in the area. Excellent food and I don't usually care for diners. Huge portions. Reasonably priced. Same with the kids menu. The waiter was not friendly and had to flag someone down to get more coffee but other then that it was great. Definitely would go back and hopefully the service will be better.
