Salt Lick is an icon for BBQ in the Austin area. The original location on 1826 in Driftwood is best. The restaurant has grown tremendously over the past few years, now with a location in Round Rock and larger facilities at the original site southwest of Austin on 1826. There is even a Salt Lick at the airport! Bigger isn't always better, as the new digs are better suited for bus loads of tourists, but the name and recipes remain the same. I preferred the old setup in the wooden shack where you could see through the walls, and the screen door slammed... that charm is mostly gone, but there is a new vibe that appeals to the mainstream. Folks I've taken all love the new digs, so out with the old and in with the new! Coleslaw made with vinegar instead of mayo is a hallmark side at Salt Lick. The sides here are pretty good, while most other places I recommend sticking to the meat, if sides are even offered. The BBQ sauce at Salt Lick is also great, yet often ignored at other BBQ outfits in the central Texas region. If you're new to Texas BBQ, start with Salt Lick as the baseline to compare all others. Then work up to Black's, Franklin and others in the area.

A BBQ experience worth taking a trip for. Food was very filling and flavorful. The meat did not need any sauce to give it a great taste. The side brought out for the meals are interesting, bread rolls which resemble hotdog buns and pickles with onions. The atmosphere was more like an indoor picnic. The only down side is they only take cash and the prices are a bit on the medium to high side for a BBQ restaurant. I would recommend trying this experience out sometime.

The brisket was great. The ribs were okay. The potato salad was plain. The coleslaw was great. The beans were out of a can. The service and setting was outstanding. The overall value was okay (because of the rising cost of beef). BOTTOM LINE: If you make your own BBQ at the house at least once a week, there is no reason to come eat here. Over $100 for a family of four??? That's a cell phone payment! But I will say that their rub seasoning is the best money can buy.

We drove about 20 or 30 minutes to get here from downtown Austin. The grounds are well kept and made to serve large amounts of people. There is a playground area for kids and a wine cellar across the street. The food was okay. Everything was tasty. The food is served on plastic plates and with comes with coleslaw, potatoes and bean. We were full by the time we left but we left us wanting more.

We heard about this place 6 years ago at NYC Big Apple BBQ where we got a sample. Wanted to come here ever since! Dream turned into reality and it lived up to expectations. Lots of seating, great sweet tea, there's a winery, outdoor seating with live music. Oh, how's the food? I think I ate til almost exploding. Must get the pork ribs and the brisket. Must get the BLACKBERRY cobbler with ice cream!! See my pics and dream the dream! The wait was only 45 min!
