I scheduled an inmate visit to visit my mentally ill sister at the Elmwood Complex. She has schizophrenia and delusions, and has trouble performing basic tasks such as dialing a phone number. During my visit, we were unable to get the phone lines working. I asked for help from the security officers twice, but they refused to assist. I explained to them that my sister is mentally ill, and has trouble performing basic operations, but they said that they explained how to use the phone to the inmates, and the inmates needed to be able to perform this task on their own. It was incredibly frustrating that no one was willing to help us with the phone. My sister is mentally ill, and I am trying to convince her to take medication to get better. We had to speak loudly through the glass, and we couldn't hear each other at all. We didn't get much time to talk, and it was imperative that I got as much time on the phone as needed to convince my sister to take medication. The behavior of the two security officers was uncooperative and frustrating, considering that my sister struggles with mental illness. How can I help rehabilitate my sister and prevent her from additional future jail time if I can’t even communicate with my sister?
Why have a phone if you’re not going to answer !
