The true test of customer service is during the holidays and for that, the Black Bear in Signal Hill gets 5 stars. We wandered in on Christmas Day not knowing they would be closing in 20 minutes. Normally, we would NOT have stayed because we don't like being a hassle for the staff, but we were encouraged to stay (and grateful, as everywhere else was closed). We found the waiter very welcoming, the service was quick, and the food was perfectly prepared. The rest of the wait staff stopped by to make sure we were enjoying our food, had enough coffee, and just to say Merry Christmas. Even the young man at the register was sweet and professional, taking the time to patiently recount the change returned to an older Vietnam war veteran who was certain he had shortchanged his bill (he thought he paid with a $10, but he had actually paid with a $20). Kudos to the employees here for their great attitude (on Christmas Day, when you know they'd love to be home with their own loved ones!), and props to the management for having the sense to hire, train and (hopefully please!) retain this excellent staff.

The food was delicious - good, solid home cooking style dishes served in abundant portions. Service was excellent and the prices are reasonable. The onion rings are so very, very tasty, and they serve what is now my favorite restaurant cornbread. Yes, we really liked it!

After a great 1st experience at a Black Bear in Vegas, we sought out this restaurant in CA. A complete 180 difference. Slow getting our order, slower getting the food, then finally had to go chase down waiter to get our check. Orders for the 3 of us came out staggered about 5 minutes apart for each, with last one being at least 40 minutes since it had been ordered. Never any drink refills. Cashier took our money and never asked how everything had been. The food was decent, but lacked the attention to detail we had seen before- chunks of lettuce core in the salad, bacon overcooked, huge chunks of onion in the salad, soup had an odd seasoning, lumpy salad dressing, etc. Will try this chain again, but won't go out of our way to find one.

Didn't have any tea bags for hot tea, except flavored. Service was kind of slow for refilling coffee. It was Friday at 4pm, not busy either. Food was delicious as always. Hostess at door was very gracious.

My first time here the food was great the service was just ok. We got there early and nobody was at the front counter. We finally got seated it took a while for them to come with the menu and ask for our drink order. Our order was made quick and it was delicious. When it was time to leave again when I went to the front counter I had to wait a while for someone to check me out.
