About

Story

Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve in Lee County is an urban oasis where visitors have opportunities to watch otters swim, water moccasins basking in the sun and pileated woodpeckers chipping away at snags. Just minutes off I-75, the Slough is a frequent stop for many of visitors to the area as well as for a cadre of local regulars and first timers. Birders flock to the Slough for a wide variety of migrant song birds and resident specialties. The protection of this important area began in 1976 when a group of Lee County students, the “Monday Group”, became alarmed at how fast our environmental treasures were disappearing. Lee County was able to purchase or get management agreements for 1,909 acres but it wasn’t until the Conservation 20/20 program purchased 1,591 acres in the northern section of the Slough that the headwaters of this system were protected. Today, the preserve encompasses 3,500 acres and is a vital cleanser of waters traveling 10 miles through one of the most developed areas of Lee County. Visitors can easily access the 1.2 mile-long boardwalk to take quick break from life’s rat race or they can spend the whole day at Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve - one of Florida’s special places.

We've been coming here for 10 years and it just keeps getting better. There is an ADA accessible nature boardwalk through lovely stands of cypress. Ferns cover almost every available surface. Come early in the morning or toward sunset for the best bird viewing. If you are at the viewing platform on the pond at sunset dozens of herons and egrets return from every direction to roost. There is a slight $1 per hour fee (the machine was only accepting credit cards when we visited) and an informative nature center.

I've visited 6 mile cypress quite a few times. It's a nice few mile hike on a boardwalk. We've seen alligators, snakes, rabbits, turtles and several birds. Best time to go to see wildlife is at sunset of dusk. It's cooler at those times too. Beautiful sunsets.

If you love nature you'll love this place. There's a boardwalk that's about a mile and 1/2 long that takes you deep into a swamp with lakes in some areas and you'll see different kinds of wildlife and plants. Even though it's swampy, mosquitoes are rare. Very nice place to just get away and see and feel nature. Even the air seems to be fresh and clean. I highly recommend you check this place out .

Just driven an hour to get there and there's a notice on the gate to say it's closed, though the website says it's open! It's one of our favourite places in the area, so please update the website, I'm sure there's a good reason for the closure, but let people know.

Excellent boardwalk hike through a Cypress swamp. We saw alligator tracks! We also saw lots of interesting herons and other swamp birds as well as turtles. There were several locations along the trail where volunteers set up telescopes so that visitors could examine birds up close. The Cypress trees themselves were very interesting too. I would definitely come back here to explore more.
