A Cautionary Tail: I had a recent experience with this Vet that I think everyone who is considering choosing them for their pet’s needs should hear. I have a 6-year-old Bengal cat who’s indoor only and has been in good health all her life. When she got sick two weeks ago, I felt I had no choice but to take her to the vet to find out what was wrong. The doctor in the practice who I wanted to see was unavailable. I ended up seeing Dr. Vitelli (who I had seen a year and half prior and did not appreciate his bedside manner at that point and requested to see the other doctor in the practice going forward). My animal was ill, so I felt I had no other option but to take whatever appointment I could get. At this point she was not eating, so she was started on steroids to help her appetite return. In the past two weeks they have run literally every test on my animal that they could throw at me with very little explanation (in laymans terms, I’m not a doctor, I don’t understand the complexities and anomalies of the tests they were running) as to the reasoning behind it. When the one test that came back positive had a secondary confirmatory test come back negative, I was only proffered more alternative (and expensive) treatment options, as opposed to just treating the condition that was identified as a problem according to her bloodwork, and to start her on a 21 day course of antibiotics, instead of trying to help me understand what the discordance between the two test results meant and explaining the need for the antibiotics. I also never received any cautionary warnings as to the side effects of either of the two drugs that they were prescribing for my animal, I had to go and research them myself. Then, when I did start my cat on the antibiotics, still following their instructions, she had an adverse reaction that seemed to set her back two weeks. I would also like to point out that almost daily, I was still calling and following up with the vet at SVA to confer and get opinions and ask questions. When I would speak on the phone with the doctor, he was quick to cut me off and not let me complete my questions regarding my cat’s care. To receive the last test result that was run, I had to call them (and when I did there was confusion amongst the staff there as to whether or not the test results had actually come back) to get the result, which was again, negative. In that same phone call, the vet continued to push for exploratory treatment consisting of full body radiography and at that point, feeling frustrated and drained, I said no. I was then “cautioned” by the doctor that he was leaving to go on vacation for 7-10 days and that I would not be able to reach out and ask any questions or express concerns I had about my cat’s care, and I was so stymied by this, all I could say was “ok”, not understanding why this would be said to me when there are two other doctors in the practice. Immediately after that phone call, I lost all confidence in the advice and instruction of Southington Veterinary associates, I contacted another local vet in town and transferred my cat’s care there. The bottom line is this: while I can’t speak for the other two doctors in the practice, in the experiences that I’ve had with Dr. Vitelli were not good. When you take your animal to the vet, no matter animal, size, breed, whatever, you need to feel comfortable with and have confidence in your doctor. Please think twice about having your pet seen my Dr. Vitelli if they are ill.
