Have known about Jim Lahey's bakery for many years and finally had the chance to visit for an afternoon break. Small bakery cafe with the nicest staff and a simple yet solid menu showcasing breads and pastries. The food is on the pricier side for what you get, yet you can be sure that the quality will be exceptional! I had the total, and could not believe how moist, strong yet balanced the flavors were; seriously one of the more memorable pastries I've had in a while...

Sullivan St bakery in Chelsea offers some of the best bread you can find in the city. Great place to sit down, order coffee and enjoy a solid breakfast sandwich. I have tried a few and particularly like the eggs, prosciutto, and tomatoes on that amazing bread. Prices are reasonable and the staff is professional. Last time I visited people were chatting and reading, I was not surrounded by robots on laptops as I often am in the city. Peaceful vibe. Grab some bread or a pastry, check out a gallery or 2 a couple of blocks a away, and savor the after taste. Top notch.

I'm German. Bread is important to me. So let me tell you: you are not going to find better bread anywhere. Period. The crust is crunchy, the interior soft with these large cavities that tell you the yeast had time to chew through the starch properly. Every bite is happiness. The qualifier would be "of this kind". NYC is sadly lacking in heavy dark whole grain breads. But that's another subject. Where the place falls through is price and attitude. They know how good they are and they treat the customer as if they don't need you ("look, there's many more customers waiting in line"). And they charge a ridiculous amount. $9 for a loaf is too much for me. My advice: get the no-knead bread recipe. With literally 10 minutes of effort you can make bread that's just as good, for a buck in ingredients.

Italian bread heaven! Simple yet delicious, and everything is fresh out of the oven. I do wish they were open later, but happy I don’t have to go down to SoHo to get the best pizza slice in the city, now it’s up the block. Try the white pizza, yummy!

Had the vanilla bomboloni and apple turnover. Both tasted good, though would have been better warm. Price was average for NYC bakery. Both were also in the sweeter side. The texture of both were good. bomboloni was soft, and the Apple turnover was crisp.
