History of Summit Grove Lodge
The re-opening of Summit Grove Lodge is a historical milestone - the latest of many in the life of this beautiful wooded site long known for Northwest hospitality.
Headley's Camp — as the property was first known — was one of the area's most popular "eating houses" dating back to the 1880s. More and more services were added as the Pacific Highway was developed, and in the 1920s, Summit Grove Lodge was constructed.
The rustic elegance and pristine setting attracted visitors from near and far, the famous and the infamous. Notable Summit Grove guests of the past include President Roosevelt, Clark Gable, Shirley Temple, Jack Benny, Laurel and Hardy, Cornelius Vanderbilt. There are even undocumented stories and rumors of John Dillinger passing through.
Summit Grove Lodge was listed on the Clark County, Washington Heritage Register in 2002. The original cedar-log walls, beams and ceiling remain. The historical ambiance is now further enhanced with the addition of state-of-the-art amenities, making Summit Grove Lodge the ideal venue for weddings, reunions, private parties, corporate meetings and other gatherings.
About the owner
Summit Grove Lodge was purchased in 2009 by the Colf family of Woodland, Washington, whose roots in the area go back to 1870 when Andrew Jackson Birt settled in the Lewis River Valley. The family has long taken an active interest in bettering the local community with their hands-on involvement in a number of historic preservation projects throughout Clark and Cowlitz counties, many of which have played a role in the family's own history.
The Summit Grove Lodge restoration has been a labor of love with every attention to detail being given to its rich heritage. The Colf family believed in the potential Summit Grove Lodge held for becoming a destination event center for the area and invested themselves in the task of breathing life back into a property rich with history, lore and beauty. The Colf family invites you to stop by for a visit and have your next event at the lodge to add even more great stories about the Lodge for generations to come.
