Story

The Teaneck Police Department celebrated its 100th year anniversary on June 1, 2014. In May of 1914, Jesson Witham and William Jahnes were appointed as police officers. They were instructed to report for duty at 10 a.m. on Monday June 1, 1914. Thus on June 1, 1914, the residents of Teaneck had their first full-time paid police department which was to grow from this two man department into an authorized strength of ninety-six in 2014. They were further instructed to "preserve public peace, prevent crime, detect and arrest offenders, protect rights of persons and property, suppress disorder in public places, enforce ordinances, serve notices, papers, etc." In our current mission statement, the prose is somewhat different - it takes into consideration the value of working with our diverse community, but our core mission remains unchanged. The mission of the department today is "to safeguard the lives and property of the people they serve, to reduce the incidence and fear of crime, and to enhance public safety, while working with diverse communities to improve their quality of life. Members of the department are committed to the highest ethical standards and to providing public services with honor, integrity and respect."

The department is further charged with the prevention and solving of crimes. Their objective is to work in partnership with the community to achieve a high sense of security. The department strives to promote community partnerships and to elevate the level of public safety through public education, continuous training, technology, and law enforcement.

The Teaneck Police Department has received National Recognition from The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and is Accredited by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. The department has an authorized strength of 96 sworn officers, including the Chief, and is divided into three divisions; Operations, Investigations, and Service. Additionally, the department has an authorized strength of 9 dispatchers, 6 civilian support staff members, 3 Parking Enforcement Officers, 25 school crossing guards, and 15 Auxiliary Police volunteers.

In 2013, the department received 56,180 calls for service, resulting in the filing of 8,174 police reports. The Teaneck Police Department is a 9-1-1 PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point). In 2013, 20,433 "9-1-1" calls were documented.

Police made 1,100 arrests, including 45 arrests for Driving While Intoxicted (DWI).

In 2013, members of the department drove approximately 428,242 miles patrolling township streets, issued 15,695 motor vehicle summonses, including 7,000 moving violations and 8,695 parking violations. Of those summonses, 346 were for violation of the Township's Snow Emergency Ordinance and 747 were for violation of the Cellular Phone statute.

Additionally, 1,502 accident investigations were conducted and 284 vehicles were impounded.

We would like to thank the Teaneck Police Department for the exceptional consideration they have shown during the recent construction on Downing Street. The officers on duty have been informative, helpful, and polite. We appreciate the wonderful people guarding, protecting, and helping our community. Many thanks, Enid and Allan Goldberg

Thanks for giving us a ticket for parking** in 3 inches of snow... such an attribution to us hard tax paying community members. Btw next time you guys are looking for someone who is running through back yards in the rain, dont pick the guy who is sitting bone dry in a vehicle and hold him up for an hour. Also the female cop that held me up last time, if she does it again im recording her nasty attitude like I did when she pulled me over, but this time it'll be an official report. I had a hoodie on and yes it makes her just as bad as Zimmerman when she says, "You're STANDING in the RAIN looking crazy with your HOODIE ON in YOUR TRUCK" .... So am I standing the rain with my hoodie or in the truck with my hoodie? Which is it? Also when you ask for my license and then hold it for 20 minutes and are still asking where I live AND IF IM SURE when I literally am 2 blocks away in the same city.... you look like idiots... In addition to already having my license and 4 cop cars assisting you... Also you have no right to tell me I cant leave until I call my friend and next time it will be a big deal because its not your business where i am going or what im doing when I have nothing to do with what you are saying. AND YES when I ask what im being pulled over for, I would like to know the truth instead of you trying to be sneaky... I do have the right to know why im being harrassed

Glad to have these officers guarding my family. They're a hard-working, well-trained, professional, and courteous lot. I don't know any of them personally, I have no family members or friends in the force. I encounter them in the local shops, when we've called for assistance, and during public emergencies, storms, etc. They are great. What a contrast to the overpaid, arrogant, lazy and abusive NYC police force, which I've witnessed many times in [in]action.

I got caught drving while being black today! Ask me why... I dont even know. But because I did not have my lights on with my windsheild wipers. Any other person would have gotten a simple warning or flicker so that I could put them on but no.. a $54 ticket is suffice. I could not even count of my fingers the amount of other cars that drove past me while I was pulled over without there lights. I should've took pictures and write down all the different license plates so that I could help out the officer. I'm 18 and haven't even been driving for that long anyways and it's exactly 9:30 in the morning. Call me what you want but I would have rather been pulled over for suspicion of drugs or something in my car because after all... its 4/20. I've never seen something so dramatic. This extremely bad rainy day and there are so many people speeding and getting into car accidents and I get a ticket for not having my lights on with my windsheild wipers and I was literally going to the computer lab to print out my paper from one side of the campus to the other. Wow! Teaneck, New Jersey police you derserve an award for your hard work and dedication. At least if this penalty appeared on the list of commonly charged offenses on the back of the ticket but no...the officer just wrote it down in other. We all still remeber what teaneck high school students did not so long ago. Protect the people in the town... don't waste your time on little old me. Let's please focus on more important things. And that is when Teaneck will really become one of the safest towns. I'm from West Orange and I have so much respect for many of the officers in my town but this my friends is absurd. Everybody wants "world peace" but why don't you start off by making someones day, not ruining it. Its Monday and its raining for Christ sake! Who ruined this officers day so that he could come and ruin mine? Yall just woke up and came to work with the mindset like "hmmm I want to give out 30 tickets today, lets make it happen!" Continue the nice work officers! - {Freedom of speech right? or will I get lynched?}
