About

Chicago's elevated park and trail system, featuring the 2.7-mile long Bloomingdale Trail and ground-level parks. C'mon up!

Story

The 606 is a rails-to-trails project that is redefining what it means to go to the park.

We’ve turned an unused rail line into a lush, green playground. This mix of an elevated trail and neighborhood parks takes you right where Chicago lives. In 2.7 miles, you’ll experience six local parks and the cultures of four distinct neighborhoods.

The 606 connects parks and people all along the way. An observatory, skate park, art installations and family education programs will mean new places to gather and room to roam. The railroad embankment that used to physically separate communities now draw them together.

Imagine block after block of uninterrupted trails. Kids are learning to ride their bikes here, commuters are finding a new shortcut to work, and neighbors are making new friends.

Join the party a decade in the making. C'mon up!

A very nice trail with friendly people and nice places to sit and hang out. Great for long walks, bike rides, or skating.

When empty it is a fantastic place to ride a bike. Its like a little highway that makes getting from wicker park to logan square a breeze. But on days when the weather is nice, it gets congested with runners, groups of people going for walks, dogs, and barely supervised kids. None of these people pay attention. They walk in the bike lane, 4 people abreast, and make it impossible to get anywhere quickly. Parents let their kids run around, so you almost hit them when riding by. Dogs are poorly trained and jump at cyclists. Parents with strollers block the way. All of this makes it very anoying to use to use. It's not designed for people on foot. It's too narrow. Pedestrians have ruined a fantastic bike path. But when it's cold, or drizzling, you can move quickly because there is no one to bother you.

2.6 miles of trees and Lush vegetation. In some parts the vegetation is over running the walkway, I don't know why this hasn't been trimmed back. You will see flora and fauna in a multitude of colors. Red, yellow, pink, white, purple, orange, blue, and of course lots of green. For an enjoyable experience take the 2 small nature trails that are very close to both ends of the 606. Be sure to look for the large mushrooms as it is nature in the wild. There are water fountains at the 1.5 and 1 mile markers in the middle. But there are no washrooms. The 606 is surprisingly Litter free, considering I only counted 6 garbage can locations. I did see lots of cigarette butts on the ground, so maybe smoking should be banned from the 606. It's a shame that there is graffiti on most of the signs. I took a picture of one of the only two graffiti free signs. The city should clean up the graffiti. Dogs and dog owners should be banned from the 606. Dog owners are not picking up the dog poop. Watch out for feces on the ground. I'm also not a big fan of having a dog sniff me while I'm trying to take a leisurely stroll. Be on the lookout for crazy bike riders as they seem to think that this is a race track. If you can go during the week it's less crowded and much more enjoyable.

Taxpayer money doing something useful in the city. Great bike/running path. I run this during daylight, but would never past 10pm. It's unsafe as many people have been mugged. Needs a greater police presence.

A lovely way to run or walk and take in city sights without worrying about traffic lights and cars.
