The Bar Method was founded in 2001 by Burr Leonard, who was trained directly under Lotte Berk of the Lotte Berk Method in London. Burr opened her first Lotte Berk Method studio in Darien, Connecticut in 1991. She and husband Carl Diehl then purchased the rights to the technique and incorporated a physical therapy component to the workout with licensed PT's. The Bar Method's flagship studio is in the Marina District of San Francisco and as of 2016, there are close to 100 studios in the U.S and Canada.
