Interesting place, if you're a science and/or archeology fan, though I think it's more for souvenirs than for "serious" science. Not everything is just fossils and bones though, they also sell some nice mineral sample collections, for those who would like to own a variety of different minerals. I would say the collections are the kind for beginners who appreciate minerals from a scientific perspective, not for beauty or decorative attributes, though they may have those too. The samples are large enough that you don't need a magnifying glass to examine them, about 2 cm long, give or take.

My mission is to buy a moth and deliver it to my friend. I don't have the money for the non-medical Asian skull from the 1800's she's been coveting, so I buy a moth which has been our spirit animal since April of 2012. I want to send it directly to my friend, but I am suddenly anxious about putting my name and return address on the box. I know she wants it, but I also know that my name and address may occasion some unwanted questions and upset an otherwise unceremonious arrival. She had left the hand-written note on her car for me to visit The Evolution Store. She is extremely clever and understands my needs. The salesperson is a 20-something woman with dark purple hair, a few facial piercings, and donning her conservative look in only gray and black covering the edges of expensive tattoos. At my hesitation to provide my return address her expression changes from one of boredom to derision. As if sensing a satanic presence she glares at me pointedly and says, "You know... we get a lot of stalkers and creeps here... I'm not sending anything to anyone unless you give me your name and address. Most people don't just want dead insects sent to them." I look up at her helplessly and want to explain the kind of love story she has suddenly become an actor in, but it is all I can do to stammer that I can see her point, and scribble my childhood address in New Orleans on the label. She takes my $100 in cash and feel strangely ashamed. A few weeks later I am upset she hasn't mentioned it and ask her about the moth. She tells me she has received nothing. The sad story of a middle-aged but still distinguished person trying to buy a moth on the sly from Evolution spills from my mouth on a tide of anxiety. I leave her that day despondent. We say nothing of it until one afternoon over lunch she pulls a little white box with a moth inside. She tells me she called Evolution and asked for the salesperson I described. As I understand it, a few days later the salesperson triumphantly returned her call letting her know she had conspired to protect her from this creep and had sent the box to New Orleans. (For a moment I was transported to into the blinding sunshine on my front porch... perhaps eight years old and opening a box only to find a ) My friend is furious and requests an identical moth be sent to her... the one she shows me today... I smile and muse on its eventual home nestled with other artifacts. I have been back to the showroom in New York. It has been renovated and the character of a wiccan coven has been replaced with that of a natural history museum (which perhaps is all the better)... Perhaps it is not so creepy to send a specimen as it is a moth.

This place is so unique and interesting, it's worth venturing to the area just to see it. I've never seen anything like it in NYC and it's surprising that you can find lion heads, stuffed creatures, etc. in the heart of such a liberal city. It's so different that it's awesome. You're likely to walk into the shop with your jaw wide open and when you leave, you are going to say "wow". There are some little cheaper trinkets you can buy there as well as tens of thousands of dollar stuffed animals. There's enough things in each nook and cranny of the shop to spend an hour or more browsing. Marvel at the wonders.

Amazing place filled with human skulls and ancient treasures. I would recommend an hour roaming around this beautiful collection of artifacts. Some affordable stuff too!

This store consistently offers the strangest items at different price points. From rocks and minerals to shells and preserved octopus, there are tons of weird things here. It seems like the footprint of the store is small, but there is a lot to see. There's skeletons and taxidermied animals too, which are interesting and super creepy.
