This is a book lover's paradise!!! Whether you choose to explore the 4 floors inside or browse through the scores of secondhand books outside, you will not be disappointed!! Indulge your love for mainstream or eclectic literary choices. I also found out that they were the first people to come up with the idea and mass produce tote bags. So you should definitely get one from the Strand!

I'm a professional writer and deeply critical reader, so my boyfriend and I like to play a game whenever we go to book stores - find Emily a new read she'll actually like. It says something to me about a book store when I leave with either an armful of books or a list of 10+ titles to go read. Overall, we spent way more time here than planned. It is a great, bustling shop with more to browse through than is possible to browse through in an afternoon. And definitely take the time to retreat to the rare books section on the top floor, especially if you need a break from the noise and hustle down below.

Pros - They have an expansive variety of books including an excellent selection of philosophy and current events titles (if that's your thing). They hold a lot of live events. The basement level is usually not crowded and feels like the set of a 90s indie movie. There are like 3 coffee places on the next block to read your pile of books. Much cheap good fiction, cheaper than Kindle and you don't have to wait for Prime. The line moves fast. The employees are friendly and have a union. Cons- The top floor is very crowded frequently, especially on weekends. The basement gets kind of hot in the summer. The science/math section is small. You can't help but accidentally bump into other dorks in the math/science section. I spent a quarter of a paycheck here once.

Books, books and more books! A busy store that has a great atmosphere. The mix of old and new books is wonderful as it was relatively easy to find out-of-print books because they were intermingled with those currently in print. The science section was very good; I was impressed as this section is typically overlooked in many bookstores. A large art, photography and fashion selection ranging from look books to critical analyses. Also a nice selection of bibliophile and pop-culture t-shirts, socks, pens, pins, etc.

As a book lover.... I honestly can't stand this place. It's super crowded and sprawling. I find it to be chaotic and it makes me feel anxious and rushed and in the way, which is no good for browsing. Basically I want to walk out the second I walk in. But full disclosure: I'm the sort of reader who wants a book store that's like a library... Neat and organized and quiet. It has some good qualities. Like A LOT of books, and I hear the staff is particularly helpful. Last note: The rare books room is divine and we'll worth a visit for that alone. If I were rating it alone it'd get 5 stars.
