There is a fee to visit the museum but it is well worth it! Make sure to give a couple of hours to see all the exhibits as there are lots of them! Of note is that the recovered turret of the USA Civil War ironclad ship, USS Monitor is located here and can be viewed from the preservation tank. However, the realistic replicas of the Monitor turret are much more pleasing to look at. There are many model boat displays and an on site model boat maker available. If interested in Maritime history and in the area, highly recommend paying a visit!

Excellent. Loved the Monitor / Virginia (Merrimack) exhibits. Very well executed, showing the significance of the ironclads. But other exhibits were well done, too.

Allow plenty of time for this amazing museum! There is so much to see, and it's laid out very well. Of course seeing the actual turret of the Monitor (even during restoration) is incredible. One of the last things to see is the international small craft, and it's terrific!

No other museum has parts of the famous Civil War Iron Clad Monitor and allows you to touch a piece of the Monitor's hull. To be able to see the remains of one of two vessels that tangibly changed naval construction, tactics and modern warfare gives me chills. A life sized metal model of the Monitor you can walk on and comprehensive exhibits of ancient and modern vessels merely scratches the surface of the museum's offering. The 3D IMAX is deceptive in its simplicity, but provides the best 3D experience that I've come across for the price. The staff is professional, friendly and knowledgeable. And as the icing on the cake parking is free, close and easy to get in and out of. Children are welcome and the museum has much to offer the upcoming generations.
