Story

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, colloquially "the Met," is located in New York City, and is the largest art museum in the United States. With 7.06 million visitors in 2016, it was the second most visited art museum in the world, and the fifth most visited museum of any kind. Its permanent collection contains over two million works, divided among seventeen curatorial departments. The main building, on the eastern edge of Central Park along Manhattan's Museum Mile, is by area one of the world's largest art galleries. A much smaller second location, The Cloisters at Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan, contains an extensive collection of art, architecture, and artifacts from Medieval Europe. On March 18, 2016, the museum opened the Met Breuer museum at Madison Avenue in the Upper East Side; it extends the museum's modern and contemporary art program. The permanent collection consists of works of art from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt, paintings and sculptures from nearly all the European masters, and an extensive collection of American and modern art. The Met maintains extensive holdings of African, Asian, Oceanian, Byzantine, Indian, and Islamic art. The museum is home to encyclopedic collections of musical instruments, costumes and accessories, as well as antique weapons and armor from around the world. Several notable interiors, ranging from first-century Rome through modern American design, are installed in its galleries.

The best of the best! You can pay-as-you-wish ONLY before March 1, 2018!!! "Pay-as-you-wish policy will continue for New York State residents and students from across the tristate region, while visitors from outside New York will be required to pay mandatory admissions; admission for children under 12 will remain free. The Museum will also now honor full-priced admissions tickets for three consecutive days, giving all visitors more time to experience each of The Met's three locations." (The Met's Updated Admissions Policy).

Absolutely amazing museum in the heart of Manhattan. Almost everything is here... Egyptian, Greek, South Asian, etc. The seasonal and traveling exhibits are a great treat. The fashion gallery is definitely a must see post MET ball. The rooftop offers wonderful views of the midtown skyline, and the bar is pretty reasonable. Definitely visit all floors if your feet allow!

Give yourself a month of days to fully embrace this one of the finest of all museums of the world. Choose first by exhibitions on now to your liking. The permanent exhibits will be here for the next time you come. Planning is essential as is their map and other important guides. Restaurants to feed the body, art to feed the soul. Your able to check luggage if your on your way to or from your train airplane. Enjoy!

Such an inheritance from the past, yet hardly managed as well as a shopping mall the size of Destiny or the Mall of America. I bought a membership but I bought the wrong membership. So my guest and I couldn't eat in a dining room with a real menu or waiters. Instead, we huddled at low tables in a makeshift bazaar on a balcony and paid almost fifty dollars for dry sandwiches and a bit of soup. As for the lounge, well let's say it's a throwback to a past when museums were exclusive refuges of the affluent. It's an embarrassment. What other museum shuts out everyone who doesn't live on the wealthy condos of Manhattan? Sorry. This isn't a private club. It's a not for profit dedicated to putting art into the hands of everybody At Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, one can just waltz into the Wolfgang Puck restaurant and enjoy a real dinner without paying admission. Facilities for the comfort of patrons have been overlooked and my contemplation of paintings in the America wing failed because I heard so many people scurrying for a lavatory they could find. Casinos always have plenty to drink and plenty of comfort stations. The MET cannot think of itself as different.

This is probably the most amazing museum that I have ever been to and it deserves 5 Stars, but I had to give it 4 stars because of the security guards. Not only do they hover over you looking for you to do something wrong, but they are also rude to boot. This is in stark contrast to the rest of the staff who are extremely helpful and friendly. As for the museum, it is completely amazing! I could only go to one art museum during my trip and I agonized over the decision, but after seeing the exhibits at the MET, I know I made the right choice. Even the storage areas are fascinating! I just wish I had more time to spend there.
