The Omni King Edward Hotel

Story

The first luxury hotel in Toronto, built in 1903, has been re-imagined for the 21st century. The focus of our $40 million renovation is to showcase the old-world charm and vibrancy of Toronto with a complete transformation of our spacious guest rooms, meeting space, lobby, restaurant and bar. While combining modern comfort and elegance, we are excited to have restored the legendary hotel to palace-like grandeur. The hotel is conveniently located in the financial, entertainment and shopping districts, the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Sony Centre, The Distillery District, Eaton Centre and the St. Lawrence Farmers Market.

Our 301 oversized guestrooms and suites have recently been renovated, combining sophistication with modern amenities. It truly redefines luxury for our most discerning travelers. Accommodations in this iconic hotel feature the finest in furnishings, custom bedding and vintage crown moldings, all with impeccably appointed marble bathrooms perfecting every aspect of the guest experience at this legendary destination.

Both dining establishments, namely Victoria’s Restaurant and Consort Bar, were included in the revitalization process at The Omni King Edward Hotel. Executive Chef Daniel Schick and his culinary team have updated the dining menus to include local, seasonal ingredients and classic cooking methods. The hotel’s long-standing tradition of Afternoon Tea – a favourite activity of families and people-watchers since the turn of the 20th century - will continue Friday through Sunday.

Gorgeous rooms and a lovely sense of luxury. All the usual over-priced amenities like WiFi that you get for free at mid-range hotels. But all this was over-shadowed by the lack of accessibility. This hotel is not welcoming to anyone who uses a walker, wheelchair or stroller. They have put only the most minimal effort into being compliant with accessibility standards. There is only one accessible entrance. You approach the entrance, ring a buzzer, ask for help, and a person has to come open the door and operate a wheelchair lift. The entrance is only a few steps and they can’t be bothered to make it accessible with a ramp? Even getting a luggage cart has to go through this same process because carts cannot come down the stairs. There is a level of meeting rooms with no elevator. The doorway of our room was partly blocked by a piece of furniture so the doorway was narrow. It is 2018. We simply don’t experience this with other hotels anymore. If the hotel values their guests who have mobility needs, they will demonstrate it by joining the 21st century and providing accessibility to all.

Fabulous renovations of this hotel. It has been a few years since I have stayed here. They have fully renovated since then. Everything is great. Really enjoyed my stay, aside from a 3:30am fire alarm, which is beyond their control. I will definitely be back. Loved everything—especially the amazing location!

This is a big beautiful, classy hotel. Definitely a five-star hotel. Here is the good and the bad: GOOD: Location - near the Billy Airport, near the King station on the Green Line, Near many prominent and important Toronto locations. Lobby - Just wow. Very big, spacious and luxurious, with giant chess pieces placed in the four corners, many "kingly" decorations, large mezzanine balcony that overlooks the lobby from the four cardinal points. Wow. Rooms - Again, Wow. The bathroom alone was larger than many hotel rooms that we have been in. The huge king-sized bed looked small in this room. Very 5-stars. Staff - Very friendly and dedicated. Internet - Very, very fast. And included, of course. Elevators - Very fast! Impressive even. Breakfast quality and service. Excellent. Delicious, with friendly staff. BAD: Front door : It's under construction. O.K., I get it. Things need to be repaired, especially in an old hotel. But they have the entrance covered up with plywood painted a dull grey. It looks like you are entering via the service entrance to a construction site. Hello!!!!!! Pay a couple of hundred dollars to an artist and embellish it a bit! Concierge: We dealt with two. Very friendly, wanted to help but clueless. I was asking for the address to a major land mark (a prominent museum). He was standing there in front of his computer, but kept trying to guess the cross streets and refer me to the doorman rather than just looking it up and giving me the address. I wanted the precise address because from experience, I do not trust the Toronto taxi drivers. Earlier that day, if I had not had the precise address to my destination, I could not have corrected and assisted my clueless taxi driver. I did not want to risk finding myself with another clueless taxi driver and so wanted the precise address, but there was nothing I could do to get the clueless concierge to give it to me. He was very polite, but it was simply too frustrating dealing with him. Shower. O.K., It's big, huge, beautiful, large enough for eight people at the same time, but when I shower, I do not want to have to play for five minutes to find out how to get the water at the right temperature. It has one of those single levers that you have to figure out that you must turn a full 360 degrees and then adjust, all the while with cold spray bounding off the walls on your cold naked body. Then, worse, when you find precisely the right temperature position, the lever won't hold in that position. It is too heavy and too loose, so it keeps shifting down to COLD, unless you turn it 180 degrees up to BOILING. Not what I consider acceptable in a 5-star hotel. SUMMARY: Objectively, as far as hotels in general go, this is definitely a 5-star gem. Subjectively, from a 5-star landmark, I had a few disappointments. So my rating of 4-stars is a subjective rating compared to other hotels of its class.

Beware: Lots of extra costs and not really dog-friendly. Be prepared to pay $15 CAD for wifi that barely functions and if you bring a dog they make you pay $50 CAD extra AND make you sign a contract stating you won’t leave the dog alone in your room for any length of time. What is the point then?!?! For the amount of money you pay + all of the extras you should at least be able to do what you want in your room provided you have a well behaved dog. I stayed at the Omni Parker House in Boston and it was an amazing experience. So far Omni King Edward has been one inconvenience after another. The dog policy is very confusing and misleading. We had already booked and paid extra for the dog when they told us that we still couldn’t leave her in our room. That’s extremely misleading in my opinion. If I had known about this policy before hand I would not have booked us a room here.

I love the restaurants here! I love the atmosphere of this more than century old building. I have stayed here several times between moves and recommend it along with a couple of other fine hotels in Toronto when visitors ask. The staff are well trained and very professional. The rooms are gorgeous!
