About

The Pit is the home of world famous Eastern style whole hog BBQ and simply the best pound-for-pound draft beer list in NC.

Story

The Pit proudly serves authentic whole-hog, pit-cooked barbecue in downtown Raleigh's Warehouse District. A celebration of all of the great culinary offerings of the Old North State, The Pit has made a name for itself as the destination for the state's signature cuisine. The pigs used to produce the barbecue are all raised in North Carolina using AWA certified farming practices, and the freshest of the state's bountiful produce is featured in the starters, sides and desserts.

Going far beyond traditional barbecue offerings with some contemporary twists on Southern favorites, The Pit also serves Texas-style brisket, baby back ribs, smoked turkey, triple-battered fried chicken, and a can’t-miss barbecue tofu dish. The tradition of Southern hospitality mixes well with The Pit’s contemporary setting in a beautifully restored 1930s meatpacking warehouse.

All of the spirits at The Pit have been handpicked to enhance the smoked and sometimes spicy fare cooked over the pit, as well as with some of the more traditional entrees. We take this to new heights with dinners that pair specific wines and beers with barbecue. And if it’s bourbon you want, we’ve got a selection of fine bourbon whiskey meant to awaken even more smoky flavors from the pit.

Okay. The Pit. I may get a little emotional here since we had to move and no longer live in Raleigh. This place is amazing. The smell alone is mouthwatering. It’s hard to pin down a favorite dish here! Their fried chicken is easily the best I’ve ever had, ever. It’s moist and flavorful unlike many fried chicken places. The brisket is so tender! Brussels are scrumptious (My mom actually Facebook messaged them for the recipe after we left and they gave it to her!) The smoked wings are full of flavor and deliciousness. Lastly the Mac and cheese is the best you can get in the area. I don’t know what it is but it’s beyond delicious. The staff is always helpful and friendly every time we’ve gone. The only thing is dislike is that I now live 10 hours away and no restaurant I’ve been to in my new area has even came close to touching the deliciousness that is The Pit.

I've heard about this place for ages and finally visited on a trip down to Raleigh. Great rustic atmosphere blended with modern touches. Good bar area for waiting for your reservation...and you best make a reservation. The portions were large and amazingly cheap compared to what I'm used to paying in the DC area. And the sweet tea was just right. I had chopped pork, collards, and fried okra. Just as I remembered from my childhood in NC. Just don't overload on the delicious biscuits and hush puppies before the main meal comes.

The Pit is a wonderful place for good southern cooking. We had the fried chicken and it was simply divine. The skin was nice and crisp while the meat was hot and juicy. The restrooms were VERY clean. The only draw back was parking. They have valet parking BUT the guy working today looked shady. We will definitely return!!!

Enjoyed the delicious food, service not as much. They use a 3 server system and the flaw with that is servers can forget request from dinners as they are busy with lots of tables. Our primary server was wonderful but others never introduced themselves and didn't bring back to go drink requested. Overall would highly recommend.

Visiting from Boston for a few days, I just had to enjoy some barbecue where they know how to do it right. My hotel recommended The Pit, a short walk, and it did not disappoint. The food was g-o-o-d. My first night I had the combo of baby backs and brisket. The brisket was nice and lean, but tender and juicy. The ribs were crisp on the outside, tender and juicy inside, just as they should be. Second night (after a 90 minute workout!) I went back, this time for the baby back/fried chicken combo. The fried chicken was perfect, like nothing I can get at home -- crunchy on the outside, thoroughly juicy inside with not a hint of either the meat being dry or the skin being mushy. The restaurant itself is clean and welcoming while still maintaining an informal feel; the staff is very friendly. The music is kept to a reasonable volume; the first night when I ate at the bar I could easily maintain a conversation with someone else who was in Raleigh for the first time. It's likely not the cheapest place around, but it's well worth the money if you enjoy barbecue. Bottom line: if you like barbecue, and you're ever in Raleigh, you owe it to yourself to pay The Pit a visit.
