This was my second trip to Heron's. My first trip to Herons, about 3 years ago, was amazing. One of the best meals I've ever had. My most recent trip was a bit...disappointing. The chef made plenty of interesting items, but none of them jumped out at me. I ordered the duck. Three years ago it was the best duck I ever ate. This time? Not so much. Fat was not properly rendered off the duck, the duck was bit too chewy and it arrived luke-warm. The dessert for our latest trip was the biggest disappointment. The "autumnal" dessert is a mish-mash of chocolate, fruits, and other items on the plate. A complete miss. Service during my latest trip was still top-notch. For three years I considered Heron's the best restaurant in NC. Now? Not so sure. The food simply isnt as tasty as it use to be. Nothing I ate on my latest trip to Heron's makes me want to quickly return.

This place is pricey, but as they say you often 'get what you pay for'. I had an amazing dinner here. Each dish is like a work of art - totally unique and very tasty. The wait staff are very professional and make you feel at home without getting too chatty or hovering over you - they give you space and keep an eye out which I really appreciated.

Herons, the Umstead hotel's main restaurant, is a dining experience unlike I have ever experienced inside a hotel. Even restaurants at top notch hotels like the Mandarin Hotel in New York or Hong Kong are not as great. My dining experience at this restaurant compared to my experience at places like Atera, Per Se, Jean Georges and Eleven Madison. The service, the presentation of the food and the imaginative and delicious flavors of the dishes were astounding. Like the hotel in which it is located, Herons is truly extraordinary.

This is a beautifully designed dining experience for a romantic evening with a loved one. The ambience is great, with quiet chatter and laughter from the guests. Herons' staff is extremely professional and they know and understand the menu items well. The menu is easy to understand with plenty of varity to the foods that are offered. Unfortunately this is where this restaurant falls short. Unless you are into brand new experiences and tastes that are influenced by different cultures and highly unique flavors, this may not be for you. Each dish has a unique and acquired taste. From the very unique takes on soups, salads, and sushi, to a very uniquely tasting corndog; or even the oddly tasting chocolate treat that was served in between courses, nothing tasted remotely of something I had eaten before. This is a double edged sword because although I have never had rabbit before, this made me not want to try rabbit again. I'm not a fan of cuisine mixed with art and random flavors strung together. I will admit the presentations were above par and out right exquisite, I just wish the food had the taste to match.
