We love coffee, but not for the reason you probably think. Yes, it’s our hot beverage of choice and we drink it on a daily basis, but it has the ability to be so much more. We love coffee for its potential.
Have you ever wondered where your coffee comes from? Who grew your coffee, picked it, dried it, sorted it. Does it matter? Were they treated fairly or paid well? Were they treated like you would want to be treated? Why is it important? Or is it?
Coffee has the potential to do a lot of good. Americans alone consume 146 billion cups of coffee each year. Coffee is the second most consumed beverage in the world, just behind water. It has become an integral component to fellowship and community in homes, coffee shops, businesses and churches, yet few people know the story behind this cherished drink. Coffee is grown and harvested in over 50 countries, most of which rank as the poorest in the world. There are over 25 million coffee farmers in the world with millions more workers and families depending on coffee incomes. Yet, while producing one of the world’s most popular products many are living in poverty.
Three Story Coffee is a missionally-driven, direct-trade, coffee roaster with a passion for giving a voice to small coffee farmers. Owned by Tony Anderson, and his wife, Sarah, they and their 3 children were called to serve coffee farmers and consumers in June of 2012. Let’s start a conversation about how coffee gets from the tree to the cup, the challenges that perpetuate poverty in coffee communities, and the role churches, businesses and individuals can play in creating change.
