Uptown Cheapskate

About

Uptown Cheapskate is more than a fashion exchange concept. It is an attitude, a personality, and an art form. Uptown Cheapskate empowers individuals to express themselves using brand name fashions and modern style without the typical price tag.

Story

Uptown Cheapskate offers gently worn brand name fashion at a fraction of the prices paid in malls, department stores and specialty boutiques.
Uptown Cheapskate provides a new way to shop. We stand behind the tag lines “buy sell exchange” and “our cash, your clothes …lets trade”. Our concept is quite simple. We buy and sell gently worn like new items at prices that everyone can get excited about. Free People, True Religion, Roxy, American Eagle and Steve Madden are some of the brand names that they’re looking for.
Uptown Cheapskate pays cash on the spot for the items that we’re able to sale and offers to donate any remaining items that you bring in. The core customers are male and female between the ages of 13-35. Someone with a great fashion sense but that may be unwilling to spend tons of money on brand name clothing.
Uptown Cheapskate is a second-hand store without the usual grunge and clutter, with clean lines and well-organized racks of clothes -- topped by a funky selection of shoes, bags and accessories. But as with any second-hand store, the adventure is seeing what treasures are buried among the other stuff.

Customer service is declining. I’ve had much more pleasant experiences in the past with previous staff and I used to love coming to this store. Selection of clothes is not nearly as exciting as it used to be. Plus, now they basically force you purchase a reusable bag and if you don’t, look forward to juggling all the merchandise you just bought out the door. They no longer place your items in a plastic bag, how inconvenient. Don’t think I’ll be coming back.

First visit; first impression: This is a phenomenal business. The clothing and accesory options are good enough for the tastes of a very picky 16 year old teenager AND his mom, who can both shop together. Plus: They go beyond most retail businesses by giving back to charity and they reward customers for not using plastic bags after each transaction (without punishing those who do!). Reduce, reuse, recycle in many levels. All this and great customer service from people who appear to believe in what they do. Needless to say, I'll definitely be back.

Wow what a repulsive customer experience. The first time I went to Uptown I was just a shopper and had a pleasant experience with a friendly younger man. He was inviting and not pushy. I decided to return as a “seller” with some clothes and was greeted by a very rude older woman. I asked basic questions about the form you fill out like “Does my email get added to a subscriber list?” And was returned with a snotty “No. We would never do that!” She was clearly hardball selling which isn’t inviting at all. Most concerning- the form didn’t have a section for # of items so if the employees were to pocket an item it couldn’t be proven. She said they had 140 cameras to prevent theft but I highly doubt that. Additionally the woman kept throwing out answers to questions I wasn’t even asking like she thought she was beating me to the point. Really weird. This sales associate sounded like a greasy fast talking shady pawn shop owner. She kept calling me “sweetie” in the most condescending manner, and droned on about wait time (that I never asked about). She said my clothes would be evaluated in about an hour and told me that if wait is under 30 min you have to stay in the store. I asked that since my wait was an hour, if I could leave and come back. She replied “your wait is exactly an hour so you should stay.” Ummm... no. Her statements were contradictory and strange. Based on the shady form and terrible service, I grabbed my bag and left before they could appraise the items. People who operate like that can’t be trusted. I tried taking my form since it had all of my personal info written on it already and she demanded that by law she has to keep it. Other than that the store itself is dingy and many of the clothes for sale still have the hair of the previous owner woven through the fabric. Gross. In concept the store sounds great but in execution this location has failed. That one guy should leave and find a new job, he was a gem. Update- The shop owner, Emily got in touch with me and apologized for the experience described above. Honestly, that's all you can ask for after a sour customer service encounter- a real apology and conversation. Emily was very nice, and answered any questions I had about how Uptown Cheapskate works. She invited me back to the store to try again, and I declined which she kindly understood. Regarding how the situation was handled post-review, I'd say Emily was a 5 star owner. However, that doesn't negate the 1 star experience I had with the original sales associate. If you read this whole review, thank you, and consider dropping in and checking out the location yourself.

The customer service was good. But the way uptown cheapskate low-balls and rips people off When buying your merchandise is ridiculous. Just to give you an example of how bad it is, I brought in a pair of Jordans, vans, and Air max 95, they also excepted a pair of jeans that i had ALL IN GREAT CONDITION, PRACTICALLY NEW..And they only offered me $35...i was kind of offended by the offer honestly. Im not some drug addict looking for quick change..My advice if you’re thinking about selling to uptown.. DONT!!!

The staff is not pleasant or welcoming whatsoever. I stood there for about 5 minutes in front of them while they had outside conversations and failed to even acknowledge me. The amount I got offered for my brand new, trendy items was a joke. When I made a comment about how insulting the offer they gave me was, the male sales associate followed up with “yeah, you could definitely sell this online for way more”. This place needs to invest in kinder, more customer service orientated employees.
