Story

For over 40 years, VCA Highlands Ranch Animal Specialty & Emergency Center has been dedicated to providing the Denver metro and Rocky Mountain Region with 24 hour emergency and specialty veterinary care for your pet, day or night, 365 days a year. Our exceptionally skilled staff, doctors and board certified veterinary specialists are uniquely trained to serve as a compliment to your general practicing vet. We are the preferred emergency, specialty, and referral animal hospital for the Denver and Rocky Mountain Region.

As a fully accredited member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), you can be sure that we will continue to strive to be on the forefront of veterinary medicine to help maintain that special bond you have with your beloved pet. Working in concert with the referring veterinarian, this allows our doctors and veterinary specialists to focus their specific knowledge in fields such as: critical and intensive care, internal medicine, oncology, surgical services, and veterinary dentistry. Together with our state-of-the-art veterinary medical equipment, we diagnose, treat, and care for our patients to the highest level of expectation. Last evaluated by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) in December 2013, VCA Highlands Ranch Specialty and Emergency Center continues to perform at the highest level of veterinary excellence we first achieved in 1978!

Furthermore, while others may offer an on-call 24 hour emergency service, we go even further and have a veterinarian in-house 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Therefore, you can be assured that VCA Highlands Ranch Animal Specialty & Emergency Center will always be available to care for your pet when called upon.

At VCA Highlands Ranch Animal Specialty & Emergency Center, we strive to provide to your pet all the knowledge, care and technical advances in medicine that you would expect from a human hospital. Since your dog or cat can’t speak to the veterinarian, it is imperative that you have confidence in our doctors’ abilities to effectively recognize, diagnose and treat your pet. We fully recognize the relationship you already have with your referring veterinarian and do not see them as competition, but as partners in your pet’s health. This allows the veterinarians and staff here at VCA Highlands Ranch to focus solely on their specialties to the benefit of your pet’s complete health.

When my 13 year old German shepherd collapsed at 9 o'clock at night, I panicked. My regular vet closed at 6:00, I was home alone, and I had no idea what to do. After reading some of the reviews online, I was afraid to come here. But other emergency vets also had a mix of great and horrible reviews. I think that's just the nature of the business. When someone is already emotionally distraught over the potential loss of their pet, I'm guessing it's not always easy to make them happy. Luckily, a friend of mine could not recommend this place highly enough, so I wrestled my dog into the car and drove here as fast as I could. First, I would like to say that Brian at the front desk was incredibly kind. He immediately put me at ease and offered to get a gurney to help me get my dog inside. Did I have to fill out paperwork? Yes. But I would have had to do the same in any ER in town if I was the one getting treatment. And it wasn't much. My name, contact information, the dog's name and age, and the standard disclaimer that I would pay for treatment received. Again, exactly what I would have had to do had I gone to the ER for myself or a family member. What I loved most about Brian was that he seemed generally concerned about my dog and her issue, and that he took time from his duties to love on my fur-baby and make her feel comfortable. She wasn't just his job that night, she was a patient in distress and he went out of his way to make her--and me--feel comfortable and cared for. Our vet for the evening, Dr. Han, was spectacular. She was compassionate and sweet. She answered all my questions, and she offered me several diagnostic and treatment options, from very inexpensive to very expensive, telling me only that she wanted me to have all the options on the table. However, when I chose the less expensive options in almost every case, she never made me feel like I wasn't caring for my pet in the best way possible. Instead, she totally validated and supported every one of my decisions, helping me to feel good about myself and comfortable in my choices. Worried that I was going to have to mortgage the house to get out the door, I asked what everything would cost, and was told that Brian would bring me a list of costs to help me make my final decisions. When I saw the cost, I was shocked. I had been there for almost two hours, and the cost of my final choices would be $250. I had expected to pay more just to walk in the door for an emergency visit. My dog was treated that night and seemed better almost immediately. In addition, the treatments they sent her home with have made her feel so much better that I just cannot get over her improvement. She's now comfortable, pain free, walking under her own power, and wagging her tail again. Not only would I highly recommend the dedicated and knowledgeable staff at this facility, but I would take my girl here again in a heartbeat. My only regret is that they can't be my full-time regular vet.

When my ten-month-old golden retriever Ollie had severe stomach pains and stopped eating, our regular vet wasn't able to reach a diagnosis and referred us to VCA Highlands Ranch. She personally recommend Dr. Sum. When we had to wait a while (about 45 mins) due to a number of emergencies (our pup at the time was starting to feel better, and wasn't a top priority in the triage), Dr. Sum was extremely apologetic. He allocated a lot of time to us, and the time we spent with him was very high quality. We never felt rushed or like he didn't want to take the time to explain all of our options. Dr. Sum was also very cognizant about the fact that we'd already spent about $1,000 on our puppy. Although our puppy was feeling better, he was still showing symptoms of pain and nausea, but Dr. Sum carefully explained our options from least expensive to most expensive. He then took a free X-ray and ultimately had us go home because he didn't feel that we needed to do the expensive endoscopy that had initially been put on the table. He predicted our puppy would be just fine, but recommended another X-ray at our regular vet just to be safe. He also said he'd personally come in to the do the endoscopy later that night if our regular vet felt we needed it. It turned out that our puppy recovered fully, just as Dr. Sum had predicted, and didn't need the endoscopy after all. We were completely blown away by his level of care and compassion, and would not hesitate to use his services again if we needed them!

Update: We received extraordinarily thoughtful and effective care from Dr. Reed, Dr. Cunz, and Dr. Pyka when our young cat, Max, had an emergency. I can't thank this team enough for saving Max, and for consistently helping us through his convalescence. Previous experience: Our cat, Sipho, always seemed as healthy as a horse. Then, suddenly, his heart failed. Dr. Cunz and Dr. Sum offered incredible care and expertise to keep him alive. Other staff members we worked with, such as Dr. Pyka and Technicians Stacy and Margo, were similarly passionate about their work, highly knowledgeable, and completely approachable. We're so thankful that Sipho's still in our life — and for everything this practice did to make that happen.

Our 2 yo Golden Retriever had TPLO surgery done here by Dr. Vonau. I have nothing but great things to say about Dr. Vonau and his team. I had dozens of questions before the surgery and they answered all of them with patience and genuine empathy. They were able to get her in for surgery within a couple days and updated me as the surgery began and then as it was ending letting me know she was doing great. Afterwards, I had many calls with questions regarding how the incision should look and they answered every one. They had me bring her in if the symptoms I described were cause for concern and would clean it up and examine it with no extra charge. Our sweet dog is back to 100% and enjoying her usual activities. Thank you Dr. Vonau!
