The Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF) is dedicated to increasing access to primary health care for uninsured and medically underserved Virginians.
Areas of Focus:
Medical Care - Did you know that 1 million Virginians don't have health insurance?
With medical grants, VHCF has helped establish community health centers in medically underserved areas of the state, and expand the capacity of free clinics to see more uninsured patients. VHCF grants typically underwrite the salaries of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and pharmacists.

Dental Care - Did you know that 3.8 million Virginians don't have dental insurance?
While there are some "safety net" clinics providing care for low-income uninsured adults, they are overwhelmed with patients. More than half of Virginia cities and counties have no dental safety net clinics at all. In some rural areas, there are as few as one dentist for every 5,000+ individuals.
VHCF dental grants totaling more than $10 million have helped establish or expand 46 dental safety net sites statewide.

Behavioral Health - Depression, anxiety, and other basic mental health conditions are among the top diagnoses in Virginia's free clinics. They are debilitating illnesses, which incapacitate their victims and fill them with despair.VHCF has helped to underwrite, and encourage the approach of integrating delivery of behavioral health services and medical care to free clinics and health centers through a variety of grants and mental health roundtables.

Prescription Medicines - VHCF’s The Pharmacy Connection (TPC) makes it easier for medical providers to obtain free prescription medications for chronically ill patients. It is utilized by health safety net organizations in Virginia, which have used it to generate $2.2 billion in free medicines for 276,000 sick, uninsured Virginians to date.

Child Health - VHCF’s Children’s Health Insurance Initiative focuses on helping all eligible children enroll in state-sponsored health insurance (the FAMIS programs). FAMIS provides coverage for doctor and hospital visits, vaccinations and prescription medicines, dental, vision and mental health care, and more. VHCF grantees have helped more than 75,000 children obtain FAMIS coverage.
