KOREAN SPA CULTURE served with MODERN FLAIR @ WI SPA 213-487-2700 www.wispausa.com
It’s a mini-escape from the daily stresses that rise like steam from the nearby movie studios of Hollywood and the skyscrapers of downtown LA. But the Wi Spa is no ordinary haven of quiet hedonism, or day-of-beauty destination.
Along with the therapeutic effects of serious soaking, scrubbing and other world-class pampering treatments, visitors to Wi Spa will discover a communal atmosphere and a different attitude towards the role of a spa. Here, friends and families gather on a regular basis to relax and recharge, much as they did in ancient Korea, when most homes did not have bathing facilities.
The spa’s impressive array of amenities will tempt visitors to linger all day, and indeed, all night. Wi Spa is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Within this 48,000 square foot sprawl of hot and cold pools, specialty saunas, and treatment rooms, spa-goers can also enjoy a full-service restaurant serving fresh, healthy Korean cuisine, a play zone for children, computers, flat screen TVs, a library, fitness center and even sleeping spots for those who feel so lulled after a generously long massage, body scrub or other specialized treatment. There is even a rooftop terrace for those seeking sunshine and open air. Membership is not required, and facilities can be accessed with the purchase of a day pass. Treatments are priced separately, and if services totaling $90 or more are booked, the day entry fee is waived.
The spa facilities occupy three floors. Both women-only and men-only floors have their own hot and cold baths, dry saunas and steam saunas, as well as treatment rooms. A note of caution: modesty must be checked at the door, as no clothing is worn in these gender-separated areas. Most visitors soon acclimate to this traditional practice and lose themselves in the sense of well-being afforded by an aromatic soak or a skin-smoothing scrub.
The co-ed floor, known by regulars as the “jimjilbang,” is a common space that is the very essence of the Korean spa experience. Here, spa-goers wear T-shirts and shorts supplied by the spa while they wait for their treatments, converse, relax, enjoy the restaurant and leisure areas, and indulge in the Wi Spa’s five exclusive sauna rooms, each with specialty minerals that help to purge toxins and rejuvenate body and mind. The signature Clay, Salt, Jade, Bulgama, and Ice Saunas are regarded by many Wi Spa clients as a vital and consistent part of a healthy lifestyle.
Individual services run the gamut from massage, face and body treatments to waxing, nail care and makeup application. Especially recommended is the Buff & Aroma Massage, a 90-minute indulgence that combines an invigorating full body scrub and luxurious massage for the smoothest skin imaginable.
