About

The Women's Humane Society is America's First Animal Shelter & Adoptions Program. Our many services for the community include an affordable, high quality Veterinary Hospital, dog training and physical rehabilitation classes, and humane education programs.

Story

During the late 1800s, the mistreatment of animals was commonplace and those who defended them were often met with contempt and ridicule. One of their most ardent defenders, Philadelphia native Caroline Earle White, helped to establish and fund the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In spite of her vital role, White was denied a seat on the organization’s board because she was a woman. So, in 1869, White and her colleagues assembled to form their own association, taking over the Philadelphia City Dog Pound and turning it into the First Animal Shelter and Adoptions Program in the nation – today known as the Women’s Humane Society.

Fifty years before women had the right to vote, this pioneering group of women paved the way for contemporary standards in the humane and ethical treatment of animals. Now, nearly 150 years later, the Women's Humane Society carries on the lifesaving legacy of our founders, committed to making the world an ever kinder, more compassionate place for all animals.

The Women's Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We receive no federal, state or local funding, and depend upon the support and partnership of animal lovers throughout the United States to sustain and expand our mission.

Mission

As America’s First Animal Shelter founded in 1869, the Women's Humane Society is committed to protecting the interests of animals, and offering a continuum of care to ensure that all animals are treated humanely with kindness and respect.

Dr. Michelle was absolutely amazing. The day before we seen her I was told by another vet that my kitty had cancer and needed to be put down immediately. I was shocked and could not accept what was said. I called and got an appointment with Dr. Michelle and received much better news. Yes my kitty has cancer but his quality of life is great. She explained everything and was so wonderful and caring. I highly recommend Dr. Michelle. Thank you so much for giving our family more time with our fur baby. ❤🐱

I have a very large, 120+lb, dog and not only are the doctors able to skillfully handle any issues we may have but the techs are also wonderful. I always laugh watching them smile and play with him as he stands up and looks over the counter while I go up to pay the bill. This is a great place and I would recommend it to anyone looking for primary veterinary care for their animal. They also have a wonderful shelter program with tons of animals in need of a good home!

I've been to different shelters in the city, and the Women's Humane Society's shelter was a great shelter. It was very clean, bright and comfortable to the senses. There is a vet there, not just for the shelter, but for pets of the community. The young women who worked at the desk were very helpful, knowing how to speak calmly and kindly. The pens were clean and had private runs for the dogs which were kept open so the dogs could go in and out in the grass .It was painful for me to have to surrender my dog, but after seeing that shelter, I knew I chose the right place. I felt in my heart that they would take care of him, and find a good family for him.

I have been taking my pets here for years but I must say I like it a lot better since ownership changed hands. We found a great vet that we intend on using for years to come.

We’ve been going here for many, many years and we’re always satisfied with how well they cared for our pets. However, in the past few months it has been IMPOSSIBLE to reach them by phone. They let it ring all day, everyday. We’ve since changed vets for this reason alone. It’s a good place for care, but you can’t get care if you can never just call and make an appointment. Having to leave a voicemail every single time is absurd.
