Carmel's oldest commercial gallery.
It is one of the great success stories of the West Coast art scene. The gallery is a city block long and has two entrances. The main entrance is next to the Fire Station and stretches a city-block long with another entrance from Ocean Avenue.
Zantman Art Galleries Beginnings:
A fascinating Dutch couple, Johan and Gertrude Zantman, launched this enterprise over fifty years ago, came to the business through rather incredible routes. Both were born in Holland. They met and were married in Indonesia where Mr. Zantman was a film distributor for theaters throughout the area. After immigration to the East Coast of the United States in 1958, they moved to California to start a business of their own. The following year they purchased the Hidden Village Coffee House and Gallery in Monterey, and by 1962 the business had grown so much they moved the gallery to Carmel.
All through the years, Zantmans has always stressed integrity and quality. Zantmans has continued to represent only the finest artists from here and abroad, bringing new and aspiring artists to your attention as well as notable artists already at the forefront of the contemporary art scene.
Thank You to Our Customers:
None of this success story from the coffee house forward would have been possible had it not been for our loyal and discerning clientele. The clientele has reached well into the tens of thousands. Before the computer, all information was done on 4x6 note cards. As we have strived to exhibit artists of exceptional talent, you in turn have returned to us time and again for your private or corporate collections. It is our hope that this mutual relationship will continue to grow and flourish in the years to come.
