Story

Why the name, 7 Monks Taproom?

Trappist beer are ales brewed by or under control of Trappist monks. Yes, we said monks. There were a total of 174 Trappist monasteries worldwide (as of April 2011); only seven (six in Belgium and one in the Netherlands) produced Trappist beer and were authorized to label their beers with the Authentic Trappist Product logo. Hence the name during 2011 when we first opened.

We love beer. Our beer flows from 46 taps and our ever-changing bottled beer selection. We consistently serve seasonal craft beers from Michigan and around the world.

Come try our food...it's delicious and a lot of it is local! Oh, we also have wine, cider, and local mead on tap.

Cheers!

Large selection of beers on tap both from MI and all over. Service was excellent, tasty pub food on the menu. Loved the spicy fish tacos. A vegetarian in our group ordered the Monk and Cheese w/o bacon. When she found a piece of bacon the staff was great about bringing her another order (quickly) and even brought her a cup of curry soup so she had something to eat while the rest of us started eating.

Half a block from my office. Coincidence? I think not. 46 taps of craft beer from Michigan and all over. Their nachos are worth the money. Drafts are always rotating, and there's always some upcoming or recent "takeover" event that results in a boatload of awesome beer. This is one place I can go where they've always got something I haven't tried. That's saying something, too, sadly. Great service, friendly bartenders, and awesome food. Did I mention it's only a half block away? A thought just entered my head ...

I was very unimpressed by this place. Our server was a mope. They were out of ALOT of beers. Chicken sliders were garbage. VERY thin chicken and the breading was very burnt. A table near ours sent theirs back too, so it wasn't just a fluke apparently. The atmosphere was boring at best. Pretty disappointed and I don't understand all the good reviews.

7 Monks has great beer and food all, regardless of if you’re a Dominican, Franciscan, or any type of mendicant monk. They even allow now monks in to try their selection of craft beer. Many local brews are featured on tap so it’s a great place to get familiar with Northern Michigan breweries. The food is pretty good too, notably the tangy nachos that go great with a lighter blonde ale or pilsner. The space is very comfy as well and a nice place to catch a game.

This is the premier beer bar in Traverse City. That's saying a lot since others (Rare Bird Brewpub, Third Brain, The Filling Station to name a few) are also excellent. What distinguishes 7Monks is the fact that they they don't brew their own but feature every Brewer and Purveyor of Craft Beer that their manager, Jason, the bartenders and crew, and the owners come across. They are equal opportunity in their promotion. There is also great attention to their place in the community, the city, state, and fellowship of beer lovers. Their promotion of tap takeovers, Michigan beers, out of state favorites is always accompanied by inside knowledge from the makers. The food is thoughtfully put together and pairs well with the libation. I dare say that if anything could be improved upon they should expand the kitchen and let the chef fly. Glad that they have expanded the brand and philosophy to Grand Rapids and Boyne City.
