AMC Kabuki 8

Story

AMC Dine-In Kabuki 8 is a movie theater in the Japan Center complex in San Francisco's Japantown neighborhood. Formerly the AMC Kabuki Cinema 8, it was acquired by Robert Redford's Sundance Cinemas chain in 2006 as part of an anti-trust agreement allowing AMC to acquire Loews. Sundance renovated the theater, and reopened it under its current name in December 2007, as the chain's second theater. On October 6, 2015, it was announced that Carmike Cinemas has acquired Sundance Cinemas for $36 million. On November 15, 2016 Carmike was purchased by AMC Theatres (which is owned by the China-based Wanda Group) for $1.2 Billion, bringing the theater back into AMC's control. AMC announced on March 1, 2017 that the Carmike owned brands will be retired and all theaters would be placed under one of three new AMC brands. It was announced on the merger page for Carmike to AMC that the Sundance Kabuki as of April 2017 was to be renamed the AMC Dine-In Kabuki 8.The theater was the first multiplex in San Francisco. It has been host to San Francisco's Cherry Blossom Festival activities, is one of a small number of theaters showing performances by the San Francisco Opera, and has screened several films for San Francisco International Film Festival and San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival as recently as 2011.

reserved seating. good sized chairs. between every two seats there's a table to place food down on the balcony seats. depending on your height there are bars in the first row of the balcony seats you might want to avoid, go with second row to see over the railings. great place for a flick, rivals some of the best spots.

This place is in desperate need of a renovation. The ceiling seemed to be falling apart with wide cracks and a decade old paint job. The floors and lobby area was need of a good cleaning. The seats were wide and comfy but leather recliners would be better. The staff although polite seemed a bit disorganized. The best part about the theater was the Coca-Cola machines. As a landmark of the city I was very disappointed with my experience here. I hope they'll be able to update the theater soon so that I'll be able to enjoy the Kabuki experience once again.

Don't listen to scathing reviews, the Kabuki is a charming and friendly theater. The staff is helpful, kind, and do their jobs. Full bar with great drink selections. The bathrooms need a sink or two fixed, but the theaters are clean and there is ample room in each row. One of my favorite theaters in town!

Best and local theater if you live by it or around. Tickets are fairly high but average for what they are since it's a theater and all. Good thing is that you can reserve seats, and there's even a bar at the top where you can bring drinks into your showing depending on the time you choose for the movie. Seats are good too, but too plush, not dirty and they clean regularly before and after each showing. The area is a bit on the ghetto but the entire area is slowly changing due to gentrification and more middle class families moving into the area improving the overall look and feel of the Fillmore. I have a long history with this theater since I grew up in the city and when this theater used to be called the Kabuki without the dine in sort of thing. Same and great theater just with now more modern amenities.

I love the architecture of this theater: multi-levels, bar lounge, and balcony seating. The only reason I give this theater 3 stars is because the seats are uncomfortable. It's not stadium seating, so I normally have no issues with my view of the screen regardless of any tall person sitting in front of me, but this was not the case at this theater. The seats do not recline. But, this is a beautiful theater.
