Story

1 Screen. Built in 1910. Operated by Landmark since 1991. The mighty Clay is one of the oldest theatres in San Francisco. Built in 1910 by the renown Naify brothers, builders of the first movie screen in town, the New Fillmore, the Clay was first a nickelodeon house. In April of 1935, Herbert Rosener reopened the Clay as The Clay International, a foreign film showcase. In the early 1970s, the theatre was part of the Surf Theatres group, run by pioneering San Francisco film exhibitor Mel Novikoff. In 1972, the Clay hosted the premiere of John Water's Pink Flamingos, and also hosted many other controversial films, including The Life of Brian. Since Landmark assumed management in 1991, the Clay has enjoyed such improvements as digital sound, new seats and an extensive refurbishment of its art deco and classic Greek accoutrements. The combination of classic appointments and modern amenities has helped keep the Clay a comfortable, laid-back place to see unique film programming for more than a century!

Historic single screen movie theatre is San Francisco. I come here to watch the movie The Room, if you haven’t experience this you have to. When friends come from out of town and the Room is playing I bring them to experience this event. Surprisingly the seats are comfortable at this theatre. Unlike other theatre in San Francisco, popcorn and candy are inexpensive here. Also, this theatre is located near nice bars and restaurants.

Very Out dated place with not much food to choice from. The men have 1 toilet while the women get a big bathroom with more toilets. The area is great and super clean and very kid friendly.

An intimate and simple single screen cinema. I liked the variety of movie posters placed everywhere. It has all the requirements to enjoy a film but none of the fluff and flash of more expensive theatres. Highly recommended for a date or any romantic get-together.

Cool place to see a nice film. Specializes in 35mm and other cool aspects for the hipster aficionado. We do like our cool films and this is a non pretentious place to see them. Saw Stop Making Sense. Yeah!
