Story

The Arkansas Department of Transportation is a government department in the U.S. state of Arkansas. Its mission is to provide a safe, efficient, aesthetically pleasing and environmentally sound intermodal transportation system for the user. The Department is responsible for implementing policy made by the Arkansas State Highway Commission, an board of officials appointed by the Governor of Arkansas to direct transportation policy in the state. The Department's director is appointed by the Commission to hire staff and manage construction and maintenance on Arkansas's highways. The primary duty of ArDOT is the maintenance and management of the over 16,000mi Arkansas Highway System. The Department also conducts planning, public transportation, the State Aid County Road Program, the Arkansas Highway Police, and Federal-Aid project administration. Its headquarters are in Little Rock.HistoryOriginally started as a commission of three elected officials in 1913, the agency had since expanded over the years to include a director and five commissioners appointed by the governor as well as its powers to include full oversight into the planning, construction, and maintenance of Arkansas roads.AHTD and the Nebraska Department of Roads were the only state transportation agencies in the United States whose name still refers to "highways" or "roads"; all are now known as the "(name of state) Department of Transportation" after the U.S. Department of Transportation. The "Highway" in AHTD's name was largely required by the Arkansas Constitution which created the Arkansas Highway Commission as its governing body; the Constitution still calls it the "State Highway Department", but the legislature added "and Transportation" to its name in 1977. Many people in Arkansas continue to call it the "Highway Department" to this day.

Nice job on the new passing lanes on Highway 7 north of Dover.

The sidewalks on geyer springs rd under the I-30 overpass has about 3 or 4 years of broken glass bottles and other garbage. AHTD workers don't pick up the trash before or after when they cut the grass.

The Arkansas State Highway Department on I 30 decides to work on the interstate during rush hour. I know they have to do construction, but there are literally no exits (there was one but nobody would let me over to get off). I have been traveling with my 7 year old daughter for six hours now (because of construction) and we both need to pee! I am severely disappointed by this! We were just in Texas for a week and a lot of their interstates are under construction in Fort Worth and in Dallas but they are considerate and they decide to do it at midnight: Number one so it is easier on their employees so they don't have a heat stroke, number two so people that of been traveling for hours upon hours don't get stuck sitting in traffic for more hours, number three people that have vehicle problems don't have to worry about their vehicle overheating because they have to stop constantly because of construction..there is so much more I could say but I really just need to find a bathroom so my daughter can use the restroom!

I wish I could give the AHTD a 10 star vote. I'm visiting my Mom who lives in Arkadelphia and being from Pittsburgh, and dealing with the absolute disorganisation and screw-ups of PennDOT, I have nothing but a great review for the AHTD! The work they have been doing on Route 30 between the Texas State Line and Little Rock is second to none. People in Arkansas don't realise how good they have it with their State Department of Transport. Work Areas are completed either on time, or ahead of schedule. I wish we could take the entire AHTD back to Pennsylvania when we head home to teach PennDOT how to actually get the job done right the first time, on time and or ahead of schedule! Well done, AHTD!
