30 Years Old and New Again

Story

The Baltimore Museum of Industry (BMI) collects, preserves, and interprets the industrial history of the Baltimore region by focusing on such diverse businesses as canning, printing, metal working, ship-building, food processing, utilities, biosciences, and garment. More than a dozen galleries replicate historic work setting with artifacts, many of which are demonstrated during educational programs. The museum tells stories of workers, entrepreneurs, and inventors.

Annually, the BMI serves approximately 160,000 people through museum programs, tours, field trips, special events, or outreach. Nearly 85,000 of our participants are students, teachers, and chaperones taking part in a dozen different educational programs.

We had such a great time! First we took a guided tour and learned about the oyster industry, the canning business, poor working conditions, the Baltimore fire, and so much more! We were allowed to touch certain items and see some older machinery function. After, we took the self guided tour, which included the tv station, automobiles, pharmacy and general store which houses numerous McCormick products. There's also ducks outside and an interesting statue that's just gigantic. Plenty of fun for young and old alike!

Lots of good, informative displays about life and work in Baltimore, mostly in the 1800s and early 20th century. Lots of good hands-on stuff for the kids. It’s an odd museum in that there seems to be a lot of wasted/underused space in places, while other areas are really packed. The working boat is a highlight if you can make it for that. Admission isn’t cheap, but still it’s a fun place to take the kids.
