About

AVAM is the official national museum for self-taught, intuitive artistry located in Downtown Baltimore's Inner Harbor next to Federal Hill Park.

Story

AMERICAN VISIONARY ART MUSEUM (AVAM) is America’s official national museum and education center for self-taught, intuitive artistry. Since its opening in 1995, the museum has sought to promote the recognition of intuitive, self-reliant, creative contribution as both an important historic and essential living piece of treasured human legacy. The one-of-a-kind American Visionary Art Museum is located on a 1.1 acre wonderland campus at 800 Key Highway, Baltimore Inner Harbor. Three renovated historic industrial buildings house wonders created by farmers, housewives, mechanics, retired folk, the disabled, the homeless, as well as the occasional neurosurgeon–all inspired by the fire within. From carved roots to embroidered rags, tattoos to toothpicks, the visionary transforms dreams, loss, hopes, and ideals into powerful works of art. More info at http://avam.org.

Interesting art museum where none of the artists have been classically trained. There are 3 buildings but one is used only for events. The main building has 3 floors of exhibits and is handicap accessible. There's a sculpture garden outside the main building. The 3rd building has a few exhibits but the main building in my opinion is the best. There is also a gift shop in the main building with unique gifts, books, cards, etc. We spent about 2 hours but did not read every detail on the displays. If you live in Baltimore and really enjoy going or bringing guests it may be more cost effective to buy a membership. It was $60 for 4 adults or $100 for a year membership for 4 adults.

Really amazing art museum. You definitely need a couple hours to enjoy everything. If you are lucky you may meet some of the artists whose work are displayed here. I would definitely recommend this to any of my friends.

We were there for Cosmic Cocktails. A nice venue. Plenty of room for dancing upstairs. The event itself was OK, not at well run as in the past - food vendors ran out at 8pm. But a cool site for a big event.

I enjoyed this place immensely. There is much more to see here than you might think. The art is interesting, often thought provoking, sometimes beautiful, and always well displayed. The layout and feel of the place were very well done. Allowed you to wander in and out of places and while there were a lot of people there you never felt crowded. I will definitely be back next time I am in Baltimore.

One of the coolest spots in Baltimore. Interesting, beautiful and unique. Art work is all by self taught nonprofessional artists. They have interesting back stories like they were blind or just fanatic about making art. They offer free workshops for kids on weekends, check the website for details. Restaurant on site.
