I can never stick to just my shopping list whenever I do grocery shopping here.  When you start walking through the store, you might think: "Oh, this place has a pretty good produce section"  then continue walking and realize that that was just the organic section.  (FYI - organic food isn't actually better for you and still uses chemicals, but we'll save that discussion for another day.) 
Berkeley Bowl West has such a great variety of fresh produce all the time.      Most grocery stores will give you a choice of 6 different types of apples-- but how many grocery stores have 6 types of eggplant for you to choose from?!  Many fruits and vegetables are sorted by size so you can get small avocados, perfect for cutting during lunch; or you can get 3xlarge avocados for making a large bowl of guacamole!

Berkeley Bowl is the reason I live in the East Bay. I have lived in six states and two major cities, and Berkeley bowl is the best grocery store I've ever been to. The produce selection is not only plentiful but the produce is so affordable and fresh! The bulk goods section is so comprehensive. The meats/fish section is fresh and enticing, with a range of fish you'd never see in your local chain store. I suspect, but cannot say, that they treat the employees well, with time off and other benefits. I am in love with this place!!

Best grocery store in the world. 
To save  $ there is a large section of bulk bins, everything is fresh as they have a rapid turnover, And in the back a whole room of produce at give away prices. (It's so ripe you must use it fast.). Then swing by the meat counter and ask for the special of the day.  I don't spend much and have top quality food.

I like Berkeley Bowl, but I have gotten sick twice on the soup and my wife has also gotten very sick, so we don't have the soup anymore. The reason why is because of elevated bacteria levels due to pouring new soup in with what's remaining at the bottom of the previous soup bin instead of just replacing the entire bin. With heat and air (oxygen source) bacteria multiplies fast and keeps transferring to the next batch. I tried contacting management but they were in denial. So contacted the CA board of health and just got back a newsletter, with no action taken. So there is no enforcement on this issue so it's up to people to protect themselves. I highly recommend not suffering multiple trips to the toilet by avoiding the soup.

Best grocery store in Berkeley.  Fabulous produce section -- every variety of everything plant you can imagine, often in both conventional and organic varieties.  Excellent meat and fish selection, including sushi grade fish and wagyu beef.  Not expensive -- usually cheaper than Safeway, for instance.
