Story

The heavily forested, 3,687-acre park lies on the southern shore of TVA's Norris Reservoir approximately 25 miles north of Knoxville. Visitors to the park will find a wealth of activities to meet any interest from guided nature tours to back country camping.

History

Big Ridge State Park was one of five demonstration parks developed by the Tennessee Valley Authority in cooperation with the National Park Service and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) as an example of public recreation development along TVA lakeshores. The structures on the park reflect the craftsmanship and stonework of the CCC, and along the trails you may see remnants of the homes and farms that existed here prior to the birth of the TVA. Before the park was created, the area was heavily populated and used for agriculture.

Other notable features of the park include: the Norton Gristmill built in 1825, remnants of Sharp's Station Fort construction in the late 1700's, and Indian Rock where a plaque commemorates the death of Peter Graves, a settler of Sharp's Station who was attacked by Indians at this spot. Also, the park has several notable structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corp.

Protecting Tennessee's Natural and Cultural Resources for this and future generations.

Nice hiking close to Knoxville. There are good views of Norris lake from Big Ridge in the winter. It is roughly a 3 mile hike to get to Big Ridge

I have lived within a mile of this park all of my life. It is a beautiful place where you can be close to nature. The staff are friendly and there are many free activities to participate in. They have a cement pool connected to the lake for safe swimming. The campground is clean and serene. There are also paddle boat rentals and an outdoor exercise area. Wonderful place for families and friends to enjoy the outdoors.

This is real close to my house and is a great place to get in some pretty good hiking miles along Norris Lake and up the nearby ridges. Going up the Big Valley trail from the parking area is definitely a lung buster.

Excellent place to get exercise, enjoy Tennessee wildlife (kayak, fish, hike, camp, etc.) and the park employees are very kind.

You were here off-season just to have a look at the park. It's very pretty and probably totally awesome in the summertime.
