The car depot is not open to the public, but two overlook galleries allow the visitor to view the power house, and to descend below the junction of Washington and Mason streets in order to view the large cavern where the haulage cables are routed via large sheaves out to the street. The museum was established in 1974, and is run by the Friends of the Cable Car Museum. The cable car operation location that doubles as a museum. You can see the 4 runs of cables (Hyde, California, Mason and Powell) and wheels spinning that pull the every cable car roaming the streets of SF. The upper level has a gift shop, old cable cars on display, and a hallway with pictures documenting the history of cable cars in SF, including the earthquake in 1906 that basically marked the beginning of the end for the cable cars... as rebuilding effort shifted focus towards use of electric trolley. You can easily complete this museum in about 30-45min. Not a big museum by any definition, but certainly rich in history. And a great place to bring kids. There is a cable car stop right in front of the museum. So, makes easy for a full experience.

Popped in to ask for help with the cable car routes. The museum staff were great and very helpful. The museum was surprisingly interesting and informative. The history of the system and its current use is quite amazing. Nice coffee shop across the road too.

I quite liked the visit. (It's free) Interesting to know that that little building is powering all the cables cars! Running them on historical big wheels. Quite impressive. Small gift shop here also. Full disabled access.

This is free, has a good amount of historical exhibits, but most importantly it's the place where they run all the cable engines. It's absolutely fascinating to see GE engines from the late 1800 still running.

Very cool. I've been to San Francisco 20 times and have ridden the Trolleys a lot. Should have done this much sooner. The best part about this is that it's a live, working building moving a lot of cable. It's free and you can spend 10 minutes or 30 if you have time. Everyone should do this. Great idea for he city to have this museum.
