San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

About

Discover the art for our time at the new SFMOMA.

Story

Founded in 1935, SFMOMA was the first museum on the West Coast devoted to modern and contemporary art. From the outset, the museum has championed the most innovative and challenging art of its time, and we continue to exhibit and collect work by both modern masters and younger, less-established artists.

I was excited about the recent expansion of the institution and renewed my membership. Very large place but the lack of photography works is a disappointment for me. Admittedly, I visited between Larry Sultan’s show and Walker Evans’ exhibit. But where is the rotation of photographs from the permanent collection? Additionally, I found entry to be a cumbersome affair for members. Finally received my membership card by mail, and apparently it is unnecessary as they need my drivers license regardless to get in. Why didn’t they just put my picture on the back? I mean Costco has this technology. I received a ticket, and promptly placed my sticker on my shirt only to be rejected by the elevator guard who needed to scan the other portion of my ticket that I had already discarded. So a return trip to the membership desk to procure another ticket even though I had my membership card out as well. Kind of a hassle, and perhaps a guest service communication issue as well. Several other guests had the same issue in line behind me. Guess I’ll feel out the rest of my membership over the next year and see how it goes....

Amazing museum! The Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit is fantastic. Be sure to wear your walking shoes! I recommend going on the weekdays and eating before or after to avoid the crowds. A must see for the artsy folks visiting SF.

Museum is new and therefore the building is nice. The cafe near the top is quite relaxing and prices are good. Nice to chill at. Exhibits were decent - they had some Warhol and Lichtenstein that I hadn't seem of that style before. I dock one star because roughly 20% of the museum wasn't accessible as they were setting up new exhibits. I understand the need to change them but they should plan the logistics better.

I got my membership (100.00/yr) and visited with my husband (you can bring one person with you for free)-- it was a good date. I spent 2.5 hours there and got to explore 2.5 floors (out of 7 floors); so I guess it take me and my husband av one hour per floor :) We will be back for the rest and new shows. I give 4 stars because I wish they have at least one day/afternoon per week that is free admission just like MOMA in NYC so it is more accessible to the public.

This place is big ! Download the app and bring headphones so you can listen the explanations about the pieces. Got to see some great work there and they really make it leisurely. Plenty of places to sit and hang out. It's just a nice space to spend a couple of hours.
