Rented a kayak here just after Christmas and enjoyed the paddle around part of the lake. 
Unfortunately the singles are only sit on top kayaks and not your normal kayak so paddling isn't the easiest and I wouldn't want to spend more than a couple of hours on it (which I was hoping for more). 
The staff were helpful.   
If you're looking for more than a little paddle and can transport a kayak, get one in Phoenix (check Craigslist).

We will not waste our time returning! Arrived at 11:15 a.m. ready to eat lunch. People standing outside said doors were locked but we could see staff inside. Man, assumed to be manager, unlocked door to let 2 employees out to go smoke!! One grat/blonde lady says "We're not open. Got a new kitchen crew so we'll try to open later." Not a word from manager, no apology to all of us waiting - nothing! We decided to go to Tortilla Flats and had a fantastic lunch, great service and lots of fun!!! Won't go back to Canyon Lake again. 👎

Great little lake with the salt river spilling into the lake. Caught many bass here. I haven't camped here yet but plan on it in the future. During the summer months the beaches can get extremely crowded with lots of people. I tend to get here early and leave when they show up during those months. During the winter season which is my favorite season, its a nice quiet lake with mostly fishermen.
