We have been here twice and will def come back a third time before hearing back to SA. Yes it was bitterly cold but if you count that it was snowing and the zoo was still open I’ll already give it 5 stars. The polar bears were incredible as were a lot of the other animals. Great enclosures for the animals and most are rescued (the grizzlies and polar bear in particular) they also have great soup and they serve alcohol which is nice too (we also had a bud lite) overall, if you enjoy animals do visit this place.

Fantastic zoo. We all traveled to Novi to visit family and decided to visit the Detroit Zoo while we were up there. Our visit was towards the end of May on a clear windy day. The Zoo is conveniently located right off the interstate, and has ample parking (and it was free). Our Cincinnati zoo pass granted us a discount ticket at this zoo. Overall the exhibits are spread out, and the grounds are clean. There is a food court centrally located. The variety of animals is fantastic, however many of the animals would not be out in colder weather as their exhibits are open to the outdoors. My favorite part is a gated area of the zoo where Kangaroos and Wallabies are enclosed. You can walk through this area with nothing between you and the animals. They keep to themselves so I didn’t worry letting my one year old son walk on the path. The bathrooms are clean, and a variety of food is available, though it is expensive. I was disappointed that the penguin exhibit was closed when we visited.

I came here as a kid, 34 years ago, and really enjoyed visiting again as an adult! The butterfly exhibit is amazing, so many butterflies everywhere. The volunteers are very helpful, they knew a lot about the animals, their names, history, what times the animals usually were active, and plans for the zoo. Lots of info about the importance of conservation as well which I appreciate. Definitely worth a visit!

Was an amazing visit :) kids enjoyed it a lot! Bring your own food thought because it's very expensive. And if you have children, you know how snacking can be! But all around great visit! We went on a good day, saw all of the animals close up! Can't wait for the Dinosaur event to start!

I love the Detroit Zoo. My 5 kids love the zoo as well , so much so that we get a zoo membership every year. This year, we renewed our membership online as usual. However, when we got our cards in the mail, they left off one of my kids. When I called to inquire they informed me of their new 4 kid only policy. They had not informed me of the change online during the renewal process and all 5 of my children were listed. When I asked why they changed it, their response was that too many people have lied about the number of kids living in their homes. Though I sympathized, I offered to meet them in the middle and bring in my kids' birth certificates. They refused to let me do so and insisted on charging me another $15. Though this isn't too much more, I am disappointed as the zoo (though probably not their intention) has told me that I should only have 4 children in my family. A family membership should include EVERYONE in my family. Next year, I will not be renewing my zoo membership. I will pay extra and get a membership to The Henry Ford.
