Story

One of San Diego County’s most precious natural resources, the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve offers approximately 11 miles of hiking, mountain biking, equestrian trails, as well as picnic areas and scenic mountain viewing points. In addition, the natural beauty of the Reserve includes such native plant communities as oak riparian, oak woodland, coastal sage scrub and chaparral. All wildlife and natural resources at the Reserve are fully protected so that future generations may also enjoy these wonders.

Weather permitting, the Reserve is open every day of the year except Christams Day. The Reserve opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes approximately 30-45 minutes before sunset.

The 784-acre Reserve was developed by Olivenhain Municipal Water District in partnership with the San Diego County Water Authority and the Bureau of Land Management, as an element of the Olivenhain Water Storage Project and the Authority's Emergency Storage Project. Owned by the Authority and managed by OMWD, the Reserve has been designed to unify the interests of domestic water supply development, natural resources management, and recreational opportunities.

The Reserve sits within the Escondido Creek watershed, which flows year-round from Lake Wohlford to San Elijo Lagoon. The creek runs adjacent to the Reserve's staging area, giving all visitors an opportunity to pass over it as they begin their hike or ride from the trailhead.

The Reserve is home to the Elfin Forest Interpretive Center Honoring Susan J. Varty, which is operated in partnership with the Escondido Creek Conservancy. The Reserve also boasts six designated overlooks, each with a shade structure and/or picnic tables and providing views of the Pacific Ocean, Channel Islands, Coronado Islands, the Laguna and San Bernardino mountain ranges, and the Olivenhain Dam and Reservoir. Other amenities include portable restrooms and drinking fountains.

The Reserve provides a wealth of opportunity for recreation, educational research, and environmental appreciation. Whether hiking, biking, riding, or just relaxing, experiencing one of the few remaining rural areas in North County is a great way to spend the day.

This is an amazing hike. It is not too difficult and is a great place for pups as well. It can get really hot in the area in general so it is always best to go out early morning. They have a rest stop near the middle that is shaded along with a even better look out at the top with a hose for the pup and bathrooms. The view is great as well of lake hodges.

Today, we decided to stop by Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve to take some pictures with our baby. These were not professional photos, just our family taking some pictures in a place we love. Yes, we were using a nice camera and yes we were nicely dressed, but no, this was not a professional photo shoot. While we were taking pictures, we were approached by a ranger who informed us that we needed a $50. permit to take photos there. Confused because I was under the impression that this was not private land, I asked why. The ranger informed me that they had an influx of professional photographers bringing their clients to take pictures there (Still a bit confused by why this is a problem...the ranger mentioned something about kids and poison ivy?). After informing him that we were not professional photographers, he pressed on by saying, "That's what everyone tells me." Our conversation went back and forth for a while as I tried to understand why, after learning that we weren't professional photographers, we were still being singled out (there were plenty of other people around taking pictures and I had a 6 month old baby in my arms...time was of the essence). Long story short, what was meant to be a nice afternoon for my family (one of the first times we have attempted to get the three of us in a photo since the birth of our baby) turned into an unfortunate exchange with a ranger and a willingness to leave the beauty of Elfin Forest immediately and never return. I gave three stars in my review because this is one of the most beautiful areas in north county San Diego.

I love this place because there are so many options. You can do a small or long hike. Should probably start early if doing a longer hike because much of the longer trails are in the sun. Really nice view of the lake and trails are maintained very well. Will be back.

Good hike. Beginning is steep with lots of switchbacks. Watch for bikers. Don't stop at the lookout. Keep going for a great view of the reservoir!

Busy but very cool hike. Love the riparian system from woody stream to scrubby desert.
