Fairmount Park

Story

Fairmount Park is a park in Riverside, California. In 2011, Fairmount Park, Riverside, California was one of ten public places named to the APA’s (American Planning Association) great places in America. The park is located at 2601 Fairmount Boulevard. The park lies between the Santa Ana River, and Route 60 to the north. It was designated a “Frontline Park” in April 2011.HistoryThe firm who designed Central Park, Olmsted and Olmsted, was commissioned in 1911 to design Fairmount Park. Although Frederick Law Olmsted had recently died (1903), his design principles were evident in the Fairmount Park planning. The primary design aspects of the park were implemented over the following 13 years, ending in 1924 with Lake Evans. In 1985, a tree inventory showed that many of the trees in the reforesting effort from 1911 were still living.Rehabilitation and revitalizationRehabilitation of the park was prompted by flooding and deterioration of Lake Evans and the increase in crime in and nearby the park. The revitalization was championed by local residents such as Pat Stewart, current chair of Friends of Fairmount Park. The rehabilitation efforts began in 2001 with volunteers willing to pick up waste or provide other general maintenance needs for the park. Community effort catalyzed funding for a $2.6 million playground.AmenitiesFairmount Park offers a golf course, two tennis courts, public barbecues, boat rentals (including pedal boats that are handicap accessible), sailing and fishing on Lake Evans, running, jogging and walking on the Santa Ana River Trail, a number of exercise classes held in the park, and the playground. It also has a well maintained lawn bowling court which first opened in the 1920s.

My children, I even my family members love this park.. We have been coming here for years, before I had children and now I bring my children to this park, and the park is better each year the park keeps getting better the city adds something new to it. Just making it the whole package, it has always been beautiful but now it's an experience you and FAMILY wouldn't want to miss..

We came to visit this place for family pictures and I will for sure be returning. When I first got there I didn't realize how big of a park it would be. It was amazing. Tons of different things to do, large play areas for kids and amazing things to see there. They even have a place to host parties in, which is amazing since there is ample space for parking. Our family pictures turned out amazing with great backgrounds. I will for sure be back to enjoy everything else it has to offer, like the hiking trails.

Beautiful park right in the downtown of the city of Riverside! I bet a lot of people don't know about this hidden gem. Restrooms are ok, the park itself is well maintained. Nice for relaxing and taking pictures! Lots of shade and places to pick-nick.

Love this park just wish the city would keep up with the lake😔 and the back end of the park. But other then that they've done an amazing job especially with the new playground for the little one's 😊

It is a nice park to take your kids and it's a huge park that has two playgrounds. But all the homeless people bother me. I get that there are homeless people everywhere but what I don't like is they are crowded in places that people should be able to go. The last time I went there I couldn't even sit down underneath the picnic structure by the playground because all the tables were filled up by the homeless. I think they need to sit off to the side on the grass or something. Parks are supposed to be for families and people yo go enjoy the day at.
