Founding Farmers DC

About

Founding Farmers is owned by the more than 40,000 family farmers of the NDFU, serving American inspired real food and drink.

Story

Founding Farmers, the Greenest Restaurant in DC, is owned by the more than 40,000 family farmers of the NDFU, serving American inspired real food and drink with an emphasis and focus on cooking from scratch.

While our restaurant is supplied by hundreds of family farms everywhere, that doesn’t mean we know every farm, and that doesn’t mean we never have to buy product from the traditional (corporate) supply chain, but it does mean we’re working hard to direct our purchasing dollars where it aligns with our values.

We’re serving the best food we can, made from scratch in our kitchens every day. Our innovative, American dishes are made primarily with pure ingredients honoring the farmers and their hard-earned bounty.

Update as of 2018-Feb: I had an amazing experience at Founding Farmers recently! To my surprise and delight I was told that fried vegetables are no longer fried in animal fat. To add to that, I tried their new impossible burger (plant based) and it tastes amazing! The fried green tomatoes tasted great as well. I really appreciate the restaurants' efforts to listen to customer feedback and offer various options. I really wanted to give another chance to Founding Farmers as it used to be my favorite restaurant until I heard about their cooking method (see below). I am happy and hope to return very soon! Old Review from 2017: I was surprised and shocked to learn that EVERYTHING that's served fried at this restaurant has beef tallow/fat in it. It's disgusting and unacceptable. Especially for a vegetarian like me, it is terrible. There is absolutely no need or necessity that french fries or fried green tomatoes needs to be fried in tallow. What's worse is that there is no option that vegetarians could get these things fried in regular vegetable oil. I will never set foot in founding farmers again.

Thank goodness we had a reservation! The six of us were seated promptly. Our waiter was on the spot, courteous and very knowledgeable. This place has a “family” atmosphere that goes well with their menu options. Everyone agreed that the cornbread was THE best ever!! I’m talking real CORNBREAD! I wish I could get the recipe.. At any rate, everyone ordered something different and everyone enjoyed their meal. Food, service and prices will definitely bring us back the next time we’re in DC! Winner!

Second visit to this location; two good experiences. The menu is diverse and plentiful. The table servers were knowledgeable about their products and able to answer any questions about the options. The food came out in a reasonable time period and was delicious, each time. The cornbread is highly recommended! The server was very accommodating when understanding when our cocktail was different than expected. He replaced it with something else without any hesitation. Two things: this place is busy, so make reservations and still be prepared to wait; the meal won't be cheap, it's not expensive but don't expect to spend less than $25-40.

Very nice dining experience. The cocktails were REALLY top notch, some the best ever. The menu is extensive and very interesting. If we lived in DC we would want to try so many other dishes. The design is noteworthy and unique. Service was knowledgeable but a little too intense for our taste. We enjoyed our quiet Sunday night dinner at Founding Farmers. We will return.

Good American restaurant with great choices. Went here twice and enjoyed the food. It is a bit pricey but well worth it for a good time with your loved once! Service is good. Try fried shrimp it is the best.
