Story

Garlic John’s, a local favorite, is a long-established chef-owned regional Italian restaurant located in the Southern Green Mountains minutes away from ski resorts and shopping.

Our extensive menu features something for everyone. We also offer daily savory specials using seasonal ingredients, and our full bar provides a warm dining atmosphere.

Outside dining on the veranda is available during the summer months. Our family-friendly atmosphere offers a children’s menu and take-out is always available.

I am from Louisiana! We have bold and tasty food. My wife cajoled me into this place and boy, was I surprised!!! The staff was young and inexperienced but delightful and personable. They truly wanted you to be served and satisfied!!! The bread served was great!! I had the arugula salad (fabulous) my wife , the panzenella salad ( also great) . She got the pasta vodka sauce capellini with meat ball. Good but bland to me. I had the puttanesca pasta and added the sausage...OMG.., this was absolutely a dish which was more than I could ever eat!!!! Fabulous!! I told our server it was as hearty and spicy as I could get in NOLA (New orleans LA) .... I highly recommend Garlic Johns as a wonderful tasty place to eat in Manchester Center VT. 10/2017 DGB

The garlic bread was good, and that was it. I ordered chicken picata and the “white wine” sauce wasnt even that- it was chicken gravy- served with horrendously overcooked asparagus and rice that had turned to a pile of mush when I had taken a bite.

Despite the mediocre reviews I found the place delightful. It offered a quiet uncrowded dining room ( on a thursday ) with wonderful service and an excellent plate of pasta with plenty of garlic. What more could one want?

GARLIC HELL! VERY slow service, poor management, staff and an arrogant owner. No free refills on fountain drinks etc. We all arrived shortly before 8 pm yesterday with a party of 6. Waited in front of the hostess stand to be seated (no hostess available) and we were ignored for 10 min before a waitress approached us. Mind you the dinning room was half full at best. Waited another 4 to 5 minutes for a table to be prepared. Another 10 min after being seated to have our drink order taken. At this point we ordered our meal as well because of the lack of effeciency being displayed. I personally ordered the mussels as an app. Nobody in our group ordered anything else except 3 cups of soup and our main course which came with a "House Salad". House Salad??? LOL Iceberg lettuce with watery gorgonzola dressing... Could you spare a tomato wedge, two slices of cucumber, carrot and a cruton or two? We recieved a bread basket with 5 pieces of thinly sliced bread for 6 of us. Um bread roulette anyone? Ok...now waiting for our drinks. (One draft beer, one mixed drink, one martini, one virgin strawberry daquri and a diet soda) Waiting, waiting, waiting.. 15 min later as we are watching the group of 5 that came after us recieving their main course, some of our drinks arrive. Virgin strawberry daquri, diet soda, mixed drink, a martini in a WATER glass????!! And an "Oh I forgot what you were drinking"? I responded with a beer please. Beer comes 2 min later... 1/2 foam for a mere $7! What a bargain.. Mind you we arrived shortly before 8... Main course arrives at 9:25. We were all but finished and asked for our checks. Waitress ASSUMED it would be all one check. Wrong... Asked for her to split it. She brings a pen and piece of paper. (WRONG move Sweetheart). We are smart indiduals, we figure it out and hand her our credit/debit cards. I have my 10yr old grandson with me who is falling asleep and wants to go home. I drive to the south side of the Equinox to our house to only find out that the rest of the party is still at Garlic Hell. After I left, our party asked for one drink or one of the soups be taken off of the bill for our wait and lack of attentiveness. The waitress supposedly asked the owner. We were denied because they were unusually busy. Really? A cup of soup or maybe my beer??? (Wrong move Sweetheart #2) Then the fun began. A young naive table cleaner came out and screamed at our party.. Yes... screamed that we were rude to ask. She then inquired if we had ever worked in the food service industry... (Wrong move Sweetheart #3).. Yes we all have. I did for 16 years while serving in the military for 10 years abroad. I directly catered to two different 4 star generals on a daily basis. I recieved numerous culinary awards in my field. My parents owned a restaurant as well. I have NEVER not left a tip in all my life until now. I have had hair in my food, over cooked and under cooked meals, tiny portions, bad fish.. I have had it all but never not left a gratuity until now. Poor service, the arrogant lack of caring the tiniest bit for the customer and aggresive screaming by Garlic John's owner and staff got my attention to not reward them or patronize them again. I also failed to mention that my previous visit to this place was 2 years prior. My debit card was double charged and I had to argue with the owner about it by providing my debit card statement. It took nearly 6 months and many follow up calls before my account was credited. I said then never again... but this time it is for real and I will make certain that anyone I know at the Vermont Summer Festival will know too!
