About

Chef Mike Isabella's contemporary Italian restaurant in D.C.'s Chinatown neighborhood.

Story

In June 2011, Chef Mike Isabella opened Graffiato, an Italian-inspired restaurant in the Chinatown neighborhood of Washington, DC. The 130-seat spot allows Chef Isabella to interact with guests while he crafts comforting dishes from seasonal produce and locally cured hams, hand-rolled pastas and marinated vegetable accoutrements. The two-story layout features an open ham bar on the second floor and a large wood oven tucked behind a U-shaped counter with 15 bar stools on the first floor. Both stations encourage dialogue between the guests and chefs.

Chef Isabella serves seasonal, artisanal pizzas and contemporary Italian fare. Equally influenced by the food he grew up eating in New Jersey at his Italian-American grandmother’s table and his extensive Mediterranean culinary training, Graffiato is anything but a traditional Italian eatery. Roasted potato gnocchi with pork ragu, chicken thighs with pepperoni sauce, charred octopus with summer squash puttanesca, and hanger steak with sun-dried tomatoes are a few of the signature wood oven roasted dishes. Broccolini with red pepper relish and melon with prosciutto are popular first plates. When the kitchen closes, the oven stays fired to feed Washingtonians looking for a late-night bite.

Food, wine and beer are sourced domestically, and often from the East Coast. Look for unique cocktails, domestic wine and Prosecco served straight from a tap.

I experienced a full 3-course meal here and left very happy. The price to portion ratio wasn't great, but it's really not that type of restaurant. Their dishes are meant to be a little edgy by incorporating flavors outside the norm of traditional Italian. I was impressed by their antipasto salad, but the main dish (chicken thighs) were just okay. Service was great and timely on the plus side. All in all, this place makes for a nice "fancy" Italian dinner outing, but I'd be just as happy to go to any other good Italian place with traditional dish recipes.

Enjoyed the beer selection and dining space. Food was good as well, we were a bit confused by our server professing that the dishes were meant to be shared, leaving us thinking that they were "family style" dishes but that was not the case. I'd still likely revisit to try some other dishes.

I can't say enough good things about this place. Great atmosphere and really helpful and happy staff. Everything I ate there was AMAZING. I went for dinner with small plates on Friday and went back for unlimited Brunch on Sunday morning. Both meals were excellent and I highly recommend the brunch. For dessert I had the limoncello flight and it was ice cold and lovely. Be sure to try the pepperoni sauce with some bread sticks. They are known for this sauce.

I went for Restaurant Week. The prix fixe menu included a wide variety of options, and portions were substantial but not overwhelming. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal of eggplant parm, pasta with squash, and cannoli, but nothing blew me away. I've seen the cuisine here described as comfort food, and I think that's right. Personally, at this price point I want something a little more exciting, but if you just want good versions of classic dishes, this is a solid option.

Easily one of the worst meals I have ever had the misfortune to attempt to ingest. The only reasons they would receive a single star are 1) zero stars aren't a choice and b) the bottomless drinks looked strong. I went for brunch, which I do recognize doesn't always have the focus or priority for quality among chefs or kitchens. Even dropping to the lowest bar, however, this restaurant failed to meet it. The waffles were cold and similar in style and consistency to Eggo, the fried chicken barely palatable, and the pizza seemingly cooked in a microwave. Given the total lack of effort in attempting to serve food of a standard that even high school cafeterias boast, the prices were utterly offensive. I've now tried several Mike Isabella restaurants, all of which have disappointed in various ways. I can safely say that after this last experience, his overhyped empire will never be receiving my patronage again.
