The Hotel Rodney was established in 2006 when Jim O'Hare and Christine Becker bought the hotel from previous owners and changed the name from the Zwaanendael Inn. A three phase renovation and remodeling followed.

Story

Looking for a quick beach getaway or place to hold your wedding/ rehearsal dinner- Hotel Rodney is a boutique hotel located in the heart of historic downtown Lewes Delaware. Built in 1926 on the corner of Second and Market Streets, Hotel Rodney is a central part of the town’s history and charm. Shops, restaurants, spas and antiques are right outside our doors. Headed to the sun? The Delaware Bay beaches are just down the road, Rehoboth Beach is a ten minutes drive and Cape May is a ferry ride away. Lewes is also home to some of the best outlet shopping on the East Coast, and it’s tax-free. Come for a couples getaway or a family vacation. And if you are planning an event, we can host your wedding, business meeting, reception or party. Our hotel and beautiful lobby are smoke-free. My guess is I had a 2-star experience in a 3-star hotel. I booked an executive room for a weekend wedding, and I'm fairly certain I was given the room that used to be the linen closet. My room was clean but VERY small for the amount of money I was paying, especially when I saw the size of the room my friend was assigned, and we both booked the same room category. I saw another room that was also quite large compared to mine, so I wonder how I got to be so lucky. I may be spoiled because I sleep on an expensive bed at home, but the bed in my room was possibly the hardest bed I've ever paid to sleep on. Hotel Rodney is not a place you go for cloud-like sleep. It was like sleeping on 2 slabs of wood with a mattress cover on top. Really uncomfortable both nights. The hotel itself is quite old, and while it does have a certain charm, the walls are thin. The last night I was there, the people in the room above me must have had to make an early flight because I heard them knocking around the room from 5:30 on. The toilet in my bathroom also filled with brown water on the second day. When I called down to the front desk, they told me the City of Lewes had shut the water off and it was causing a backup, but I know other hotels weren't having the same issue. Like I said in the beginning, I think I just had a bad experience at a not-bad hotel, but I also don't see me coming back here.

We loved it! My husband and I came here not knowing what to expect and were very pleased. It's nestled in between these adorable shops surrounded by a historic neighborhood. Close to amazing restaurants - especially Agave right across the street. Downsides are parking availability and somewhat thin walls. Also, there is no mini fridge in deluxe rooms which wasn't a big deal for us as weekend travelers but if you're staying longer it could be.

The location and service fabulous. The room was perfect size for 1, maybe 2. I found the bed very uncomfortable because the mattress was so hard.

Location is very nice, a little noisy. Service was super friendly and quick. The rooms are very pretty and clean.
