The ONLY place for fresh, amazing bread. And croissants. And a stunning array of sweet, lovingly made treats and cakes. A gem in Sarasota, wonderful local family business. Spoiler alert: breakfast sandwich - ON ciabatta, with ham and cheddar.

Recently wanted to get a German Chocolate Cake as a surprise for my wife's 63rd birthday. We had moved to Venice from Massachusetts two years ago and had been unable to find a GC cake that would meet her standards. I had heard about Jim's Small Batch and decided to give them a try. I called on a Tuesday and was able to pick up the cake on the Saturday. My wife loved it. I loved it. Our neighbors and guests loved it. This cake was the best that we have ever had, and we have a had a fair number of German Chocolate Cakes on her birthdays. This one was dense, sweet, and yummy. The dark chocolate on top was perfect. The cake was created with obvious passion. Thank you Jim. You are an artist.

Went for first time last week. Loved the smoked salmon sandwich with tomato and brie on a baguette - very tasty and fresh. Not so thrilled with the cappuccino, as I asked for it "dry" and it was very wet. They did have a new person there. I will try again. But the food offerings and bakery goods looked great. A full house in there.

There is no debating that the baked goods are excellent and the food as well. We are infrequent guests as we are infrequently stay in Sarasota, but it has been one of our go to places for breakfast and bakery goods. So why the 2 stars? Virtually every time we are in there it is this frantic ambiance that stands in the way of relaxing and enjoying a quite time cup of coffee and a savory muffin. Everything seems to be in a fast paced crisis. While the front counter is efficient I suppose, it always seems to be in state of crisis of one thing or another. The main counter person, while well intended, unintentionally perhaps, conveys a palpable tension to others in the bakery, staff or customer I suspect. She is not mean spirited or angry, but I suspect that her tension in the store either indicates a poorly run process from ordering to receiving the food or just a way of expressing thinking out loud. Now this last time, the kitchen also erred on two of the four orders, and we appreciate reconciling with this in our bill, but I also can't help wonder if this same frantic exasperation permeates the kitchen as well...or perhaps that's where it starts! Anyway, be mindful and breath deeply!
