Kentmere Veterinary Hospital

Story

Dr. Kevin P. Coogan, a native Delawarean, has established a strong presence in the Wilmington area throughout his many years in the field of veterinary medicine and surgery. A second generation veterinarian, Dr. Coogan's childhood home was attached to Suburban Animal Hospital on the Kirkwood Highway where he assisted his father, Dr. Arthur P. Coogan, while growing up. Some of his fondest childhood memories are of accompanying his father on farm calls to dairies that populated the area during that time. His childhood experiences with animal care propelled him to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. After receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware in 1976, he went on to the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine where he graduated in 1980.

Upon graduation, Dr. Coogan practiced in the Washington, D.C. area for seven years. His first position was in a mixed animal practice where he worked in equine medicine, companion animal medicine, and surgery in Great Falls, Virginia. He then took on the role of head of emergency services at Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington, D.C., a large multiple doctor practice serving Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

In the spring of 1987, Dr. Coogan moved back to Wilmington to establish Kentmere Veterinary Hospital. This move allowed him to continue to assist his father until Dr. Coogan Sr.'s retirement at age 87. Dr. Coogan Sr. recently passed away in the fall of 2013.
Dr. Coogan and his wife, Amy, have lived in the city of Wilmington since opening Kentmere Veterinary Hospital. They are the proud parents of four children; Catherine, Anna, Joseph, and Lillian. Their family also inculdes five cats and one three-legged pit bull terrier, all rescues from his practice.

Absolutely wonderful veterinary hospital! This is the only place I'll be taking my babies from now on. The staff is very pleasant and love what they do. The wait time is always short and so far I've been able to get an appointment pretty quickly. You can always tell a good doctor/nurse especially when they are so thrilled to be helping your companion. Dr. Tancredi was amazing and so sweet to my new kitty who is very very shy around new people. I couldn't ask for a better doctor to treat my 3 cats and the 5 kittens my newly adopted kitty had 7 weeks ago. I can't recommend enough!

Yes, the staff are nice and the wait times are short. But that is not worth your pet's life. Please do not go here! My cat is dead because of GROSS NEGLIGANCE on multiple levels from this "practice." 1) I was misinformed about how to manage my cat's diabetes, told I can test with pee-sticks, and blood tests were unnecessary. I found this is not the case when talking to the ER doc trying to revive my cat. 2) When I brought my cat to the vet concerned because he was again peeing more, seemed lethargic and wobbly, Kentmere Vet Hospital MISSED the TEXTBOOK signs of acidosis, which is a COMMON complication of diabetes, and CUREABLE if caught early enough. 3) They DELAYED reading me my cat's blood results, even when I called multiple times and said I thought he was dying and was in respiratory distress. I waited 2 DAYS from expressing concern to being told my cat's condition was beyond their scope. 4) They FAILED TO INFORM me about the Vet ER (Vet Specialty Center) down the road until they gave me the test results, which I had to wait hours "for the doctor to read," EVEN THOUGH THE RESULTS WERE READY. These house could have improved my cat's outcomes, which they knew were a poor prognosis, yet still made me wait/ made him suffer, for formality. 5) They told me to STOP giving my cat insulin, when that is THE OPPOSITE of what should be done in his condition, and exacerbated it. He needed MORE insulin, which they gave him immediately at the ER. By the time we heard that the vet center existed, it was 2 days after I brought him to the clinic expressing concern, during which I had called back multiple times reporting on his rapid decline, even saying that he was in respiratory distress and I thought he was dying. THEY DID NOTHING WHEN I SAID THIS!!! GAVE ME NO OPTIONS!!! MADE ME WAIT FOR BLOODWORK!!! After being given the blood work results and told of the ER, we took him right away to the vet specialty center as an emergency patient, and he spent 2 days on life support, but was too far in at that point to be saved. My baby died because of GROSS NEGLIGENCE by this center. He had a TEXT BOOK CASE of a COMMON, CUREABLE condition. I was not taken seriously or told of the vet ER until it was too late. If I made a smarter choice of a vet, or listened to my gut when Dr. Coogan frequently suggested ways to, in my opinion, "cut corners," or taken it seriously when I asked for vaccinations and the tech forgot to give them that visit, my cat would still be alive If your pet goes here and is doing well, it may just be because they are healthy. I'd pull them before any real medical care is needed. This vet should be stripped of his license. I can't even imagine this level of negligence. To add insult to injury, my cat's ashes were delivered to this terrible vet, and they handed them over the counter without a word. No, "sorry for your loss" or anything. Dispicable.

Dr. Tancredi is wonderful. The staff is tremendous and the care is top notch. Our pets are members of the family and so any time something goes wrong with them it is difficult. The doctors and staff here are awesome at not only patient(animal) care but also at explaining what the best, most reasonable course of action is to treat your pet, while not going overboard on expensive tests or treatments that may or may not actually help. If they tell you a test is necessary or not recommended they are doing it from a patient focused perspective, not from a money making venture and that honesty is exactly what I'm looking for and respect in a veterinary practice. Top notch all around and highly recommended.
