Keplinger Funeral Home was formerly known as the Fennig & Weil Funeral Home, owned and operated by Arthur A. Fennig and Herbert Weil.
In 1951 Carl D. and Carolyn J. Keplinger purchased the existing business out of its storefront location at 203 E. Washington St, Hartford City.
In 1952 Carl and Carolyn Keplinger purchased what was know in the early 1900’s as the home of W. R. Krauss, a wealthy and influential druggist. Many Hartford City residents would know this as the home of the honorable Judge Ethan Secrest. The Keplingers made the purchase of the home for their business and Keplinger Funeral Home is still ran from that location at 509 N. High St., Hartford City.
The Keplingers held an open house for their new location on November 27, 1953 after the completion of the renovations. Carl D Keplinger continued to own and operate the business until March 1, 1985, at which time Jim and Vickie Barry purchased the business with their three children Jimmy (wife – Emily), Scotty and Frances which they raised in this community.
Along with the purchase of the funeral home the Barry’s were also introduced to funeral director Keith W. Gross. An interesting point of fact is that when Carl Keplinger purchased the firm in 1951 from Fennig and Weil, Keith was an employee and he continued to serve the community under the ownership of Carl and Barry’s. Keith remained a huge part of Keplinger Funeral Home until his death in 2002.
