Story

Travelers along the Santa Fe Trail used to arrive on horseback or by wagon to this lawless frontier town, where Billy the Kid once evaded a lynch mob. Today, travelers enjoy a more civilized reception at this KOA, tucked into the pinon- and juniper-scented foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Wagon-wheel ruts, 900 historic buildings and the Fort Union National Monument highlight the area's past. Lakes and a national wildlife refuge showcase its natural wonders. At KOA's Cafe del Guapo, sample the green-chile Philly cheesesteak sandwiches and delicious steaks. Have your reunion or get-together in the new rec hall facility. Find Southwest and authentic Indian items in the campground store. Summertime fire truck rides at KOA make for a memorable visit. Rental unit/loft available (seasonal with breakfast).Pool: May 15 - September 15. Max pull thru: 110 feet. Your hosts: Denny and Debby Matthews.

Easy to find. Great campsite! I've stayed here twice on road-trips. Clean restrooms/showers. Decent wifi signal where I was.

One of the better KOAs. Clean, friendly but right next to the highway. Easy off/on I-25. Good gas station with beer and Subway.

Don’t arrive after dark! Navigating is a nightmare! It is difficult to find an empty site using the map and there is no lighting within camping areas — it would be nice if at least ground lighting were used to guide you through. The trees are not trimmed to account for large RV movement—we ended up with significant scratching. Most of the 50 AMP sites are taken by what seems to be long term campers, as are many of the other sites. The feel is more of a rustic mobile home park than what we’ve come to expect at a KOA. Definitely do NOT recommend.

We were in site 48. We were only staying one night, but we had to unhook the car so we could maneuver the RV enough to get level. We were here a few years ago. At that time we were in one of the sites in the front. Those sites, sites 1 through 7, are much more level. Our site was mostly dirt with some gravel in it. When it rained, the whole park was muddy. Needless to say, we were not happy and will probably not be back.

Located off I-25 about 5 miles south of Las Vegas. Located on side of a hill so the sites are terraced, providing a good view of the landscape to the east. Most of the sites are pull-throughs. The roads are dirt and the pads are gravel. The roads are a little rough, but even the big rigs did not appear to have any problems. Facilities include gift shop, nice laundry, and pool. We did not use the restrooms/showers. They have a patio grill serving breakfast and dinner (good casual food). WIFI coverage was generally good, but sometimes slow. No cable. Both the Pecos National Historical Park and the Fort Union National Monument are about 30 miles away and highly recommended. Would return.
