Welcome to The Mark Twain House & Museum, where the great American author lived and worked from 1874 to 1891. Open every day but New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, July 4, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

Story

Welcome to the Mark Twain House & Museum! Twain lived here from 1874-1891 with his wife Olivia and their three daughters. Many of Twain's most famous works were written here, including The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.

National Geographic called the house "One of the top ten historic houses in the world."

We hold tours every day of the week! Please come visit.

It was great to tour the house of one of America's greatest authors and learn more about Samuel Clemens better known as Mark Twain. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and pointed out those small little things about the house that made it unique as well as showed some of the quirks of Mr. Clemens. If you have the opportunity to visit, I'd recommend it. Note that pictures aren't allowed inside

They have been restoring this place for the last 50 years. It really shows, everything is well put together. Things in the home appear to be original or a very good reproduction. The tour guides have excellent knowledge about the property. Our group asked many questions and the tour guide had answers for all of them. Picture taking is not allowed inside the house.

Awesome experience, I was here for the Connecticut horticulture conference at the attached museum and it was a great venue. At lunch they gave everyone a tour of the house and it was amazing. Tour guide was great. Don’t ask about if it is haunted, they didn’t seem to like that.

This is a great destination for adults. The docent we had been was very courteous, engaging and we'll informed. Some of the guides dress in period costume, such as the butler. There is no touching allowed so not a good place for kids. The lighting is very dim in the house, apparently to keep it as Historical as possible. There is no photography of any kind allowed.

My boyfriend and I just did the gallery (no house tour) and even that was a gratifying experience. We learned a lot about the great author, especially with the scavenger hunt worksheet provided at the beginning. It's a small but well-put-together gallery. We hope check out the house one day.
