About

Bucket-list destination for music-lovers from across the world. Breath-taking musical-instrument collection, from celebrity guitars to the rarest violins.

Story

The NMM's renowned collections of more than 15,000 American, European, and non-Western instruments are the most inclusive in the world, making the NMM the premier institution of its kind.

Included are many of the earliest, best preserved, and historically most important musical instruments known to survive.

Self-guided multi-media tours allow visitors not only to see and hear many of the instruments, but also to learn more about them through curatorial commentary and videos.

Mission

The National Music Museum serves as an international center for musical instruments and related materials. With its comprehensive collection -- from the commonplace to the rare -- the NMM endeavors to collect, conserve, research, exhibit, and interpret objects from around the world, bringing people together to study, enjoy, and understand humanity's diverse musical heritage.

This place is a gem on-campus. After attending the University for 3 years, I finally made my way over to the National Music Museum. I am sad I didn't visit it earlier. The exhibits are put together beautifully with a self-guided audio tour. So many amazing instruments from around the world. This is a must see when in Vermillion.

The museum is very well designed. The self guided tour included electronic devices that link to audio or visual files that explain the museum exhibits. They have an excellent collection of instruments. I took my 8 year old son and 6 year old daughter. They thought it was awesome and really enjoyed the experience. We were the only ones in the museum. I can imagine it would get quickly crowded if a large group came through as the exhibit rooms are quite small. If you are a fan of music or a musician, you would probably enjoy it quite a bit, as I did. Finally, the staff I interacted with were excellent.

Wonderful place for anyone interested in the history of instruments from all over the world. A free self-guided audio tour is included. I got there at 2 and it closes at 5. 3 hours is definitely not enough time to spend in this fantastic Museum!

Much more interesting than I expected. They give you earphones and a player so you can pick different instruments to hear and listen to a description. Some really interesting instruments from around the world.
